long stalked, leaves biternate, the narrow lobes generally with a few teeth; stem leaves in a whorl close below the flower, similar but with short broad petioles. Flowers 2.5-4cm across, solitary, usually white, with generally eight to ten oval, rather pointed, petals. Achenes woolly. Rocky places and screes above 1800m. Local in the Alps and the mountains of Yugoslavia, southwards to Crna Gora. This little-cultivated species probably flnds its closest ally in A. sylvestris, but it is a smaller plant of higher altitudes. Var. alpina has violet-tinged flowers. [Pl.26]
