Botanical Description

Tufted to small hummock-forming. Leaves linear to broadly so with one to three pairs of stem leaves, dark green. Flowers solitary on stems to 5cm high, pale to deep pink, with petals 5-7mm long. A white flowered form is known. Short alpine pastures in the eastern Alps and Carpathians. D.g. subsp. gelidus has larger flowers, 2-2.4cm across and carmine-pink to reddish. Endemic to the Carpathians. Easy to raise from seed but generally short-lived.
