A suckering thicket-forming shrub up to 45cm or more tall. Winter buds brownish-red. Leaves composed of nine to fifteen, oblong-elliptic to ovate, sharply and deeply toothed leaflets 2-3cm long. Flowers white, to 9mm across, usually in clusters of more than five. Fruits globose, about 6mm wide, pink. Western China, at high altitudes as a component of alpine scrub and amongst rocks. Confused with the true S. poteriifolia, but easily separated on habit and height, plus flower and fruit colour.
