Heuchera americana, 'Emperor's Cloak'

Coral Bells

Price: £2.30
This is a superb variety - planted towards the front of your border, it will gain the attention of all who pass and urgent enquiries will be made as to its name and origin. It forms neat and tidy mounds of wonderful foliage consisting of puckered, folded and pleated leaves in rich beetroot-red to deep purple colours, and which appear to be almost transparent in the sun. From these emerge in delightful contrast, like lights in early twilight, thin stems of charming, fluffy white flowers. The seeds may produce the occasional green form but this, too, will have crisped and frilled leaves and still be worthy of a corner in your garden. 1½ft (45cm)

Heuchera americana, 'Emperor's Cloak'

Fine foliage plant

Reviewed by Lesley Marron on

Named varieties of Heuchera are expensive to buy and I have had very good results with seed produced plants of this variety. The seeds are tiny and fiddly to sow. They need to be sown to the surface of the compost, sprinkled with vermiculite and kept in a covered container. It will be weeks before they are large enough to transplant. That said, they then become very easy to grow. The flowers have never done much for me but the leaves are superb, large, wavy-edged and a rich reddish purple. Unlike many semi-evergreens they don't become ratty in winter. They will grow well in so many situations moist or dry and sun to partial shade. I enjoy them with Queen of the Night tulips and a backdrop of Clematis montana 'Mayleen'. They are equally good with the fiery reds of Crocosmia 'Lucifer' and contrast superbly with the green sword shaped leaves. Primrose leaves also look especially good with them.

Germination Instructions

Sow indoors at any time. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 18-27°C. Light is needed for germination. Germination takes 10-60 days approx. If germination does not occur cold stratify. Move to 5°C for 4-6 weeks then return to warmth for germination. Even under ideal conditions germination can be erratic. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.

Growing Instructions

Prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral soil in full or partial sun. The woody rootstock tends to lift out of the ground with growth, mulch annually or lift the whole plant and replant.

Cultivation Instructions

Deadhead or remove faded flower spikes. If foliage is damaged by frost shear off before new growth emerges in spring. Propagate by division in autumn or spring.
