GUNNERA INSIGNISGunnera insignis, also known as the poor man's umbrella, is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants. It is one of many species of gunnera. This plant is known for its extremely large leaves which can grow to 3.4 meters long. The Gunnera insignis does the best in moist, but not wet conditions. Gunnera insignis can be found in Panama, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
Also, the Gunnera insignis has a special symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. Bacteria enters the plant through the glands found at the base of the leaf stalk. Inside the plant, an intracellular interaction occurs where the bacteria provides nitrogen for the plant and the plant provides carbon for the bacteria. This benefits the Gunnera insignis which grows in rainforests where the soil is lacking in nutrients like nitrogen. |
