MXY-7 "Ohka" - WWII kamikaze :final compo

Hi all,

I start here my third wip/project. As I am very slow in modelling and I have not a lot of time for it, I tried to choose a “easy” model.

This one will be the Yokosuka MXY-7 “Ohka” (Cherry Blossom in Japanese), nicknamed “Baka” (crazy in Japanese) by the Allies during the Second World War. It is an aircraft specially designed for suicide attacks by the Imperial Navy (wikipedia).
The model used operationally was the Model 11 (rocket engine), built in 750 copies. I chose a “what if” model : the Model 22 powered by TSU-11 reactor. It was well constructed of 50 but not used in operation.

Blueprints - as usual - are quite rare, sometimes right in dimensions but wrong on details etc. I did not found any good walkaround for Model 22, but some references and do my best with it.

[edit] Here it is the current achievement : [/edit]

A lot of things to do : improving clay renders, finish the cockpit, add some details on whole plane, texturing, lighting and so on !

Comments and critiques are welcome !
Thanks for viewing and reading.

PS: there is no link between my forum name and the plane name

Quite a good model, looks clean and nice. Cant wait to see textures and renders ! Saw your MiG-21 and that was very impressive, so i think this one will be too.

wow! have to follow this!

Nice job of modeling.

Hey, fast answers !

@scorpion81 : thanks, I have tried to push modelling on this one. I saw your Cadillac, you love modelling !
@Scott : thanks too for kind words. Warthog is such a nice plane, keep to work on it, I’ll follow your thread too
@Steve S : very appreciated !

I’ll try to update it this evening…

It is good to see another WIP from you, ookka! You’ve picked an interesting plane to model, I’ve never heard of this aircraft before. It seems fitting that it was designed specifically for suicide attacks, it looks like a missile with wings! Your progress is already looking very promising.

Hi all,

@James : thanks a lot for your nice words. Yes, it looks like a missile, I agree… One way ticket plane

A quick update with some parts separated on the rear and the front of the fuselage. Need to fix the karman junction now… I added some glass canopy. I think I will finish interior and pilot modelling after the main body texturing. More motivating

Thanks for comments !

saw some nice pics on web

are you going to do the inside too ?

nice work

happy cycles

@RickyBlender : Thanks for pics ! By “inside” would you mean the cockpit interior or cockpit AND engine  ? I think I will model the cockpit interior but not the whole engine ! Only visibles parts or “could be visible” engine parts… Thanks for nice words too.

Wing junction fixed and the last for today :

Thanks

I did the B-17 / B-24 cockpit 2 years back
lot’s of meters and details

good luck

happy cycles

Awesome! Do this things have a gear for the start process or ramps like rockets?

if you want I ported my b24 cockpit to cycles so I could show it here or open a new thread for it
let me know

happy cycles

Ookka, the model looks pretty well! You have recreated all its details, I am sure that when you apply the materials and textures it will look like the real thing!

@Scott Graham: these airplanes were mounted as “large bomb” below a bomber. It carried it near the target, then released.

Looking good. I live by wright paterson AFB in Ohio. The AF museum here is one of the largest in the united states, they have a couple kamikaze bombers there. They are very interesting to look at. I am excited to see where this goes.

Ahhh i see…i feel very sorry about the pilot’s - but this vehicle looks like a modern cruise missile…japan engineering always a step forward…

Hi all,

just a quick answer to comments.

@Scott Graham: thanks a lot. Witold had already answer to your question. I’ll just precise that the TSU-11 engine aims at giving a larger range after the drop from the Betty bomber.

@RickyBlender : I’d love to see your work on cockpit. Maybe it should be easy to push it in another thread (especially if you want critique) ? As you want, if you like to put an image here, no problem !

@witold: thanks a lot mate ! You know that your great book had help me a lot to give a new touch to my own methods. Thanks again !

@Thornton Strolia: thanks for nice word. Paterson is a big AFB. I’d love to see the museum planes. Lucky man !

Thanks all for viewing.

here is the main panel but missing some of the other smaller panels around the cockpit
still lot’s of work and will complete this later on !
these B-24 had 4 engines with a lot of meters for each motor
and no PC to help at the time LOL

happy cycles

@RickyBlender : Hey, what a BIG job… would take months to get it ended.

lot’s work on this
I got like a few other panels for the autopilot firecontrol ect

so many details for the B-24

have you begun to work on your panel ?

happy cycles

Here is a picture of the one at our AFB museum. Absolutely amazing reading the stories of each of the planes and their pilots in the WWII-Vietnam sections.
