Organic Bulgarian Allium

The Nectaroscordum siculum 'Bulgaricum', also known as 'Bulgarian ornamental onion' or 'Allium Bulgaricum', is a cultivar of the Nectaroscordum siculum , which is also called 'Sicilian honey garlic'.
Its special features are its imposing, towering flower stems, which are covered with graceful, hanging flowers that look like a carousel when put together.

The plant is formed by 20 to 30 bell-shaped flowers with a total width of 15 centimeters, which grow on ten centimeter long stems that grow on top of a flower stalk of approximately 70 centimeters high. The flower stem grows from a clump of long narrow leaves that die and re-emerge annually. The flowers add a touch of exotic beauty to the garden with their beautiful shades of cream, green and burgundy.

Once the flowers bloom, they attract pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies, contributing to a healthy ecosystem in your garden. They bloom late in the spring, making them easy to combine with tulips. When the tulips have finished blooming, the Bulgarian onions take over.

When the flowers start to bloom, the flower stems grow upwards, making them look like little rockets.

The 'Bulgaricum' is distinguished by its vigorous growth and elegant appearance. This cultivar can reach impressive heights, making it both visually appealing and an excellent choice for creating vertical dimension in the garden. Its majestic presence makes it ideal for accentuating borders, rock gardens and overgrown gardens.

How, where and when do I plant Bulgarian ornamental onion flowerbulbs?

A Nectaroscordum flowerbulb needs a cold period. Therefore, plant it in the ground in the autumn from October to January. The planting depth is 2 to 3 times the flowerbulb itself and the planting distance is 2 to 3 times the width of the flowerbulb itself. It can be planted in the sun or in partial shade, preferably in a nutritious clay soil. Sprinkle some cat litter in the planting hole in case of poor sandy soil.

Soil PH: Slightly acidic to neutral.

Care of the Nectaroscordum

Cut off the spent flowers at the top of the flower stem and let the rest of the flower stem and leaves die. The flowerbulbs can possibly be removed from the ground for propagation in July. Dry the flowerbulbs and store them in a warm place until October and then plant them again. The flowerbulbs naturalize very well in the right location. They can also remain in the ground during the summer. For optimal results, provide annual organic food.

Origin of the  Nectaroscordum siculum 'Bulgaricum'

The Nectaroscordum siculum 'Bulgaricum' is a cultivar of the Nectaroscordum siculum , also known as Sicilian honey garlic. This particular cultivar is often associated with Bulgaria due to its name, but it is important to note that the exact origins and breeding process of this cultivar may not be fully documented. The Nectaroscordum siculum is generally believed to be native to the Mediterranean region, particularly in countries such as Italy, Greece and Turkey. It is possible that the 'Bulgaricum' cultivar originated from a selection or breeding work carried out in Bulgaria, hence the addition of "Bulgaricum" to the name.

Particularities

DNA research has shown that the Nectaroscordum is a relative of the Allium. The plant also emits a light garlic scent.
