This AMC Gremlin got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1974 AMC Gremlin 401XR was reportedly modified a few years ago by the owners and family of the former AMC high performance dealer Randall Engineering of Mesa Arizona. The Randalls were known for building 21 401ci V8-powered Gremlins in the mid-1970s. Like the originals, this example is based on a Gremlin X and further equipped with a manually-shifted 904 automatic transmission, positraction rear end, Edelbrock carburetor, tube headers, 2.5″ exhaust system, and front disc brakes. The car has covered approximately 500 miles since completion, and is offered by the selling dealer with documentation on the Randalls, photos of the build, an original window sticker, a signed owner’s manual, and a clean Oregon title.

In 1972 Randall Engineering received unofficial factory support from AMC to put their 401ci V8 in the Gremlin economy car with the intent to go racing. Just 21 examples were reportedly built, with 20 sold as street cars and one used for drag racing by the Randalls including at the 1972 Winternationals. Documentation was reportedly not retained for the original 21 cars, rendering their VINs unknown.

The donor car for this build was purchased by the Randalls with the intent of being the first in a series of 401 XR continuations, making this car #22 in the series. Sheet metal was repainted in G4 Plum Metallic with correct white Rallye stripes per the door tag and original window sticker. The Randalls applied a 401XR decal to this car, as they did on the original series of 401XRs. The seller notes that the paint is of driver quality, with imperfections noted in the video and gallery below.

A detailed walkaround and driving video is provided above. Holes are noted in the front bumper and the reverse lights are not hooked up, but all other exterior lights are said to be working.

The cabin features stock high-back seats wearing black vinyl upholstery and vintage competition-style lap belts. The seller notes that the factory headliner is distorted, and numerous cracks are present under the carpeted cover on the dash. The 904 transmission is fitted with a manual valve body and operated with a B&M shifter.

An aftermarket tachometer is mounted to the steering column, while stock instrumentation remains in the dash cluster. The fuel gauge is not working, which the seller believes is due to incorrect ohms from the sender in the aftermarket fuel tank. The windshield wipers work on only one speed and the radio is inoperative. Just over 87k miles are shown, approximately 500 of which were added since the build was finished.

Power is from a rebuilt 401ci AMC V8 backed by a 904 automatic transmission and positraction rear end. Modifications include an Edelbrock intake and carburetor, finned valve covers, equal-length headers, and a dual exhaust system with high-performance mufflers. The seller notes dampness around the speedometer cable on the transmission, which is also missing its inspection plate.

Photos of the engine rebuild are provided and a 401 stamping is shown on the underside of the block.

The sale includes numerous photos and articles showing the Randalls’ history with AMC in Trans Am, Baja and drag racing from the 1960s-1980s. The Randalls are still active in Baja racing today using Jeeps. The owner’s manual was signed by Mike Randall, creator of the 401XR, and other Gremlin memorabilia are included along with a window sticker.
