'CORAL ALTER' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa '珊瑚台-Shan Hu Tai')

'CORAL ALTER' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa '珊瑚台-Shan Hu Tai')

珊瑚台; Shan Hu Tai; Coral Alter.

'Shan Hu Tai' also known as 'Coral Alter' or 'Coral Terrace' is a striking tree peony with showy, 8", salmon-pink to coral-red blossoms of a ruffled lotus form. This fragrant peony flowers in the mid-season and matures to a height of 6' to 8' and width of around 5 feet. Very hardy and easy to grow, P. suffruticosa reliably produces some of the most stunning flowers in the garden.

The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (peonies) for over three thousand years! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition.

USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches and you can expect them to blossom the first or second year after planting.

We do not ship potted peonies.
