Geranium pratense ‘Splish Splash’

Eye-catching hardy geranium with white and blue flowers from early summer

Established plants in 2 litre containers

Description

Geranium pratense ‘Splish Splash’ (also known botanically as Geranium pratense ‘Straitum’) is a really unusual garden geranium known for its eye-catching white and speckled blue flowers. The foliage is typical of other geraniums and is mid-green in colour and strongly divided, emerging in neat mounds that gradually spread through the season. From late May onwards the plant starts to put out its flowering stems, and the flowers on this plant appear mostly white but with splashes of mid-blue to mauve colouration (hence the name). The colouration is caused by a genetic condition, so each flower and plant is unique in the way the colours mix.
These established, garden-ready plants have been grown at our nursery in Cornwall and are supplied in 2 litre containers. They will grow to an ultimate height of about 60cm (24 inches) with a similar spread.

Growing Advice

Like most hardy geraniums, this is a very low maintenance, adaptable and reliable plant. It’s happy in a range of soils and needs nothing but a tidy up in spring, when you can cut all the old foliage back to the base to make way for the fresh foliage coming through. You can also do that once there are a few less flowers towards the end of summer to tidy it all up. In our experience it grows more compactly with more sun, but will flower happily in partial sun too.
