René Magritte, The Portrait, 1935

An eye-catching still life by René Magritte. Titled The Portrait, this 1935 painting boasts a tilted perspective, angled towards the viewer as if inviting them to take a seat and partake in the food and wine being presented to them. But as is always the case in the work of the lauded Belgian surrealist, all is not quite as it seems. A closer look reveals that the slice of ham on offer, comes replete with a watchful eye, gazing out unblinkingly as if daring you to slice into it.
