Planting
As soon as possible after receiving the Sicilian Honey Garlic (Nectaroscordum) bulbs, they can be planted in the garden. If the Sicilian Honey Garlic bulbs cannot be planted immediately they must be stored frost-free. Potted bulbs are not normally frost resistant. Plant the bulbs about 10 cm deep and about 10-15 cm apart. Loosen the soil with a fork and plant the bulbs roots down. Refill the hole and avoid walking over the planting area. Plant the Sicilian Honey Garlic bulbs one by one with a small trowel. For larger groups make a wider hole and plant more bulbs together. Nectaroscordum siculum grows best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or part shade. Sicilian honey garlic in the garden The unusual flowers of the Sicilian Honey Garlic (Nectaroscordum siculum) look charming among other plants in the border. Their tall stems work well with other plants and you can create imaginative combinations with the ornamental onion (Allium) 'Forelock' and the Mariposa Lily (Calochortus). Plant the Sicilian Honey Garlic in groups of 8 or distribute several evenly through the border between other plants.
Care
Nectaroscordum siculum bulbs can remain in the same spot for years on end and each year you will even get even more flowers. Remove the flower stems when flowering is over and this will help direct energy back into the bulb. Only remove the leaves of the Sicilian Honey Garlic when they have turned yellow. Each year the flowers multiply so the following year you will once more be delighted to see them back.
Extra
The Sicilian Honey Garlic (Nectaroscordum siculum) has elegant pendulous flowers borne at the top of the tall stems. The nodding bell-shaped flowers are particularly enticing with their unusual colourings. They are green and white on the outer side and on the inside green, white and warm red. (Bumble) bees love the nectar from these flowers. When the flowers have ceased blooming, they stand upwards which gives the appearance of a long decorative feather. The narrow leaves spread a typical garlicky smell when rubbed. Sicilian honey garlic is closely related to ornamental onion (Allium) and has even been crowned bulb of the year.
