Expect four seasons in one day when travelling along the Great Ocean Road.

The Great Ocean Road experiences all sorts of weather throughout the year. Much like Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road can experience all types of weather in one day. Sometimes you will arrive at an attraction and it’s sunny but 10 minutes later the wind kicks in, and the rain starts. One thing all the months have in common is how windy it is on the Great Ocean Road.

The Great Ocean Road will experience all four seasons in the year (and yes, sometimes even in a day!). Each season brings on something new you can see or experience when on the Great Ocean Road. But the 12 Apostles will always be awesome, no matter the season. Let’s check out each season.

Autumn

You avoid the peak season but still get the warmer weather. Visiting the Great Ocean Road between March to May is a perfect time.

A bonus to visiting in autumn is you get to watch the whales return to the Victorian coast. All you need to do is head to Warrnambool at Logan’s Beach viewing platform.

Winter

If the hot weather just isn’t for you, then June to August is the time to visit. These are our winter months. As winter welcomes more rain, the waterfalls are magnificent to see as they’re fuller. So, head to the Otways and check out some of the beautiful waterfalls and the lush rainforest.

Spring

Between September to November is when the weather slowly starts to warm up and flowers start to bloom. It’s beautiful going along the Great Ocean Road and seeing the additional colour the flowers give.

Head to the Otways and take a walk (or hike) through the lush rainforest. You’ll be able to see any more flowers that are blooming! And if you visit earlier in spring the waterfalls will still be full from the rain in winter.

Summer

Summer welcomes the busiest time of year between December to February. The beaches are beautiful to be around to see the sparkling blue ocean.

This time of year is the best time to wander through the rainforests as the trees keep the area cool. Or visit Apollo Bay and enjoy the summer weather in the town and beach.

Regarding the weather, the best time to see the Great Ocean Road is during summer. You’ll expect warmer weather without the freezing cold winds that winter brings. Booking a tour is also a brilliant way to see parts of the Great Ocean Road. You’ll leave Melbourne in the morning and spend a full day exploring what the road offers.
