About Rex Begonia
There are over 2,000 species of Begonia, and horticulturalists have created even more varities by cultivating all sorts of shapes and colors! They're native to tropical regions around the world, but are now found in homes in cold climates as well. Their taxonomy is far more complex than other plants, with species belonging to different cultivar groups. They contain oxalic acid, so be sure to keep them out of reach in homes with pets or children! ⚠️
Taxonomy
Begonia rex-cultorum
Begonia
Begoniaceae

Finding light for Rex Begonia in your home
Rex Begonia may have difficulty thriving, and will drop leaves 🍃, without ample sunlight.
Place it less than 3 feet from a south-facing window to maximize the potential for growth.
Select your region to see how the current weather in your area affects the placement of Rex Begonia in your home 🏡.
How to fertilize Rex Begonia
Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil it’s likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Rex Begonia after it doubles in size or once a year—whichever comes first.

Sad Begonia :( Suggestions for this Rex Begonia? I bought it a while ago and it was super dried out, so I trimmed everything and repotted, but I can’t seem to get any growth. I finally got a teeny tiny bit of height just recently but now the leaves are all shrivelled and dried out. Would keeping it in a plastic bag help raise the humidity? Is the pot too big? I feel like I’m always fussing over this plant so I’d hate to dig it up and repot it again but I’m at a loss #Begonia

All downhill from here? Ahh! My poor Rex is going downhill quick. I noticed a lot of what looked like burned leaves and moved him to a different window that gets less sun. He was on a south facing window and I moved him to an east facing window. I have a tendency to overwater so I really try to hold off on watering unless he is dry. Hes been doing so well and the last like three days has been looking worse and worse. The leaves feel super crunchy at the ends but still soft and pliable in the middles. When I do water him I use filtered water. #Begonia #Begonia

#FreshLeafFriday So i propagated my Begonia Rex for the first time and didn’t expect it to grow so quickly. But look all the new leaves!! and they all look so different. First photo is March 5th, Second photo is the 12th of March & the rest of the photos are from today 😊🪴 Edit: when checking the roots I noticed she’s also growing little leaves on the bottom of her stem! 🥰 #HappyPlants #Begonia #RexBegonia #BegoniaBunch #BegoniaRex #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PropagationStation #Propagation #PLANTMAFIA

is this possible to save? this is a rex begonia that was once thriving? but i’ve needed to repot it for a while and haven’t gotten to it. I will say I am not a plant expert, and all the leaves have fallen off but there are still two stems that seem to be doing okay? any advice? there was no drainage in the pot and ai think that was the issue

Help! What’s happening. I got this plant a week ago and repotted it with a clear pot with drainage holes 3days ago. Today she’s drooping #Begonia

Just got this #RexBegonia it needs help #Begonia my new begonia lost quite a few leaves after I brought it home. There is some new growth under there though so I thought maybe it was fertilized recently. I repotted it and watered it because roots were coming out of the plastic nursery pot. Now the leaves that I didn’t trim are crispy and have tears in them. One new baby leaf looks a bit yellow and pale, the rest are fine and nestled under the big leaves. I had it in the sun one day and that’s when the leaves crisped up I assume but it’s still happening even if 5m from a south window. This app tells me to place it closer to a window but then it’ll scorch again? #Dyingplant #BegoniaEscargot attached a before photo! #help #helpneeded #NewPlants #advice

What other plant parents say
The coloring of this plant’s leaves is spectacular and really unique. I have the Red Splash variety of Rex Begonia and I love the jagged edges with their silver/gray stripes. This one has clung and flourished despite being in a forgotten planter outside until it was quite cold. It’s really a hardy, beautiful little plant!

This is my 3rd begonia added to my collection, and while I previously thought they were dramatic and easy to kill, I’m finding my begonias are proving me wrong, this one too. Betty likes the bathroom windowsill, bright indirect light, water about once a week. I love the variegated leaves.
I bought this plant from Lidl when it was wilting and basically dead. The minute I took it home and put it in water is perked up! It’s the easiest plant to take care of because the leaves droop when it needs water, and once you water it, an hour later it perks back up!
