Description: A watercolour painting of the 'The Buggane of St. Trinian's' produced by Miss K. Gebbie of Waverly House, Waterloo Road, Ramsey and entered into the Open Art Class in the 1925 Cruinnaght Exhibition.
The painting has a handwritten inscription in the bottom corner, taken from the Buggane of St Trinian's story in Sophia Morrison's book 'Manx Fairy Tales': 'Do you see my great body, large hands, and long nails?" "Hee! Hee!" rejoined Tim, the tailor. "Do you see my great limbs, large feet, and long...?" (but ere the Buggane could utter the last word, the tailor put the finishing stich to the breeches, and jumped out of the Chapel, just as the roof fell in with a crash ......'
Sophia Morrision published her collection of 'Manx Fairy Tales' in 1911, based on her work as a Manx folklore collector. The book was republished posthumously in 1929 with illustrations by the internationally renowned Manx artist, Archibald Knox. The Cruinnaght Vanninagh Ashoonagh (Manx National Gathering) was an annual Manx cultural event held on the Island at Hollantide in the 1920s, with competitions for Manx songs and recitations, Manx music and art and original essays in Manx literature. The event was revived in the 1978 as Yn Chruinnaght, an Inter-Celtic Festival.
