      Description
      Annuals. Culms 16-65 cm high, tufted; nodes softly villous. Leaves 4-15 x 0.2 - 0.6 cm, linear-lanceolate, apex acuminate; sheaths to 15 cm long; ligule a row of hairs. Panicles 6-14 cm long, pyramidal, reddish-brown. Spikelets 4-7 mm long, ovate, villous; pedicels 2-4 mm long, pilose at the tip. Lower glume 1-1.5 mm long, oblong, emarginate. Upper glume 3-5 x 1.5-2.5 mm, boat-shaped, gibbous, mucronate or aristate, 5-nerved, densely villous. Lower floret male or barren. Upper floret bisexual. First lemma 3-5 x 1.5-2.5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, aristate. Palea 3-5 x 1-1.5 mm, elliptic, hyaline, 2-keeled. Second lemma 2-3 x 1.5-2 mm, ovate-oblong, coriaceous. Palea c. 2 x 1 mm, elliptic, coriaceous. Stamens 3; anthers c. 2 mm long, yellow. Stigmas brownish.
