4 | THE COLLEGIATE | WINTER 2023

Dear Pilot Family,

Our founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle did not promise an easy road for his students (or the Brothers for that matter). What he did provide was a strong disciplined Catholic education where every student grew in mind and spirit. Each pupil labored daily to live up to the challenges that their teachers and life placed on them. A student’s growth came through struggles and tests, and they progressed like no others had before. Lasallian education was synonymous with the highest quality instruction, and it is still the same today.

Throughout the past two years, I have challenged the staff and faculty to show me how De La Salle Collegiate is going to progress. After nine months of significant input through surveys, meetings, and healthy debates, we have come up with strategic initiatives. These initiatives will continue the growth of the school and enhance our students’ experience. Our plan is an ambitious one and will certainly bring struggles. I am reminded of a quote from Fredrick Douglass – “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” With that said, I am confident that we will progress and achieve each objective.

De La Salle’s future is bright and thriving because of God's grace and our supporters. We cannot do any of this without the prayers and generosity of all our benefactors. New ideas and opportunities bring costs. Thank you to all who continue to support our students through challenges and struggles leading to growth every day.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.

May God continue to surround you with His love,

MISSION STATEMENT

De La Salle Collegiate is dedicated to the Lasallian Catholic education of its diverse students, including the poor and disadvantaged. We are a collegepreparatory school inspired by the spirit and tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle, where learning takes place in the presence of God. Each student is encouraged to develop his faith, character, intellect, and morality.

This mission is embodied in the school’s motto: Builders of Boys. Makers of Men.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Our faith extends far beyond religion. It’s rooted in one another and our commitment to excellence.

A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR DE LA SALLE COLLEGIATE

It is with great enthusiasm that we announce Builders of Boys. Makers of Men. The Next 100 Years! A Capital Campaign for De La Salle Collegiate

After months of planning, consultation, and collaboration involving hundreds of key stakeholders, we are prepared to do something special that will take our school to the highest level of excellence.

This transformative endeavor will lead us into the celebration of the school’s 100th year and our work of Lasallian education and faith. The plans call for a new, state-of-the-art science and technology center, a technology upgrade of all classrooms, a renovation of the school’s athletic facility, and an aggressive increase of the endowment. This initiative will prepare our students for an even better future. The STEM center will foster ingenuity and creativity, and will encourage experimentation and teamwork. New technology will stimulate research and problem-solving as we seek not only to address the current educational facility, but also to modernize and enhance the school setting and opportunities for multiple generations of future Pilots.

As we know, schools are made of more than bricks and mortar alone. Most important are the students and families that come to us, embrace our work with the Christian Brothers, the Catholic Church and Lasallian

education, and seek to become the difference makers that our world so desperately needs. It is for this reason that part of this campaign is committed to expanding our endowment. The investment into our endowment provides tuition assistance so that all might have the opportunity to benefit from De La Salle’s educational experience. A strong endowment helps ensure that our school will live to see the next 100 years.

DLS Offers Morning Algebra Class for Eighth Graders

Since early September 2022, seven eighth-grade students have been at De La Salle Collegiate every morning, taking an Algebra 1 class with DLS math teacher Joe Novak ‘03. The class is free and covers not only Algebra topics, but also some preparation for the High School Placement Test.

The students, all boys, are from St. Germaine, St. Isaac Jogues, and St. Thecla schools.

Novak is pleased with the group’s progress.

“The class is off to a great start,” he said. “The parents have been very supportive and always get their boys to school before 7 a.m.”

He added, “And, the boys are really working hard and getting a good feel for how a high school math class is.” The students are dropped off each morning by their parents, and DLS provides transportation to their home schools after the class finishes at 7:45 a.m.

Novak emails grades at the end of each quarter to the student’s respective math teachers, a grade which then becomes part of their overall report card.

Novak has taught a variety of students from third through eighth grade during summer camps at DLS, but this is the first time he is teaching eighth-graders in a classroom setting.

A teacher at DLS since 2007, Novak is a graduate of John Carroll University. He chairs the DLS Math Department, and currently teaches Advanced Algebra 2, Honors Pre-Calculus, and Advanced Placement Calculus BC.

DLS Faculty Mark Milestone Anniversaries with AOD

Congratulations to DLS faculty members Dave Slusser ‘93, and Lindsey Tula, honored for their milestone anniversaries as teachers in the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The two were honored at the 2022 CHSL Prep Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit.

Slusser, who teaches in the Theology Department, joined the DLS staff in 2008, after six years of teaching at St. Clare de Montefalco, his home grade school, in Grosse Pointe Park.

Slusser attended Wayne State University, majoring in political science and social studies, with a minor in Spanish. He later earned his Master’s in Education through the University of Detroit Mercy.

In 2001, Slusser married his wife, Shelley, who also teaches in the Theology Department. They are the parents of Michael, a DLS senior, and Angelina, a freshman at Regina High School.

“I cannot imagine a better school or place to teach,” Slusser said. “DLS is a true brotherhood that has afforded me so many opportunities to build quality, lasting relationships with students and colleagues. I firmly believe in Catholic education, and DLS provides some of the most rigorous academics in the state.”

A foreign language teacher at DLS since 2008, Lindsey Tula celebrated 15 years of service to the Archdiocese of Detroit.

She has taught Spanish 2, Honors Spanish 2, and Honors Spanish 3, as well as AP Spanish 4.

She attended Central Michigan University as an undergraduate, majoring in Spanish, and earned a Bachelor’s in Education. She later earned her Master’s in Language Learning at Wayne State University.

“I love my fellow staff, teachers, and the students,” Tula said. “I’ve worked with many of them the entire time I’ve been here. I still talk to many alumni, and many have kids! I like being a part of their life stories, and I hope to have their kids in class one day. It’s also fun to have been in the same place for many years and seen the growth.”

Tula and her husband, Diego, have been married nine years, and are the parents of a 20-month-old daughter.

Why Give to the Lasallian Fund?

The Lasallian Fund is the name for our school’s annual request for your support. It is named the Lasallian Fund to reflect that we are a Lasallian school, and follow the Mission of our founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, who instructed us to educate all students, regardless of their financial capability. To be true to that Mission, we keep our tuition as low as possible, actually charging less than it truly costs to educate each student. This is the financial gap we need to fill with the Lasallian Fund. Your gift is a tax-deductible opportunity to support Christian education, and invest in the future of the Students of De La Salle Collegiate.

We thank all of those listed here who gave to the Lasllian Fund between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.

LIFETIME ALUMNI MEMBERS

2021-2022 Alumni Dues

The De La Salle Collegiate Alumni Association is a tiered system designed to fit the needs and means of our alumni. Paid alumni dues will be used to offset the cost of alumni events. These include, but are not limited to, the 1926 Society, Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Association events, college visits, and class events.

Purple Level: $19.26

Become an annual 1926 Society Supporter. Designed especially for graduates within the last 10 years, graduates will receive access to the Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Associations.

Gold Level: $100.00 Pilot Supporter

For those who graduated more than 10 years ago. Receive annual access to the Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Associations, as well as invitations to future DLS Alumni Association events and special promotions.

Christian Brothers: $250.00 Lifetime Member

Receive a lifetime admission pass to all DLS home athletic events, access to the Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Associations, and invitations to future lifetime member events and special promotions.

We also need to recognize our 700+ alumni who are already lifetime members. We appreciate their support!

DLS Day of Service Impacts Local Churches, Non-Profits

De La Salle Collegiate faculty, staff, and students participated in a “Day of Service,” in September 2022, providing a variety of services to area parishes, schools, and non-profit organizations.

Faculty member Ben Westpha '16, organized the entire event, making contacts with various organizations, and organizing transportation for certain events. Students signed up in advance, so that all locations had adequate coverage.

President Larry Rancilio '86, said, "Our staff instills in our students the value of giving back to the community in many ways. I am happy our school was able to make an impact in several different areas. In speaking with the students, I believe they were impacted even more, and isn't that what serving others is all about."

Collections are by grade level, with grades earning points toward Spirit Week.

The Class of 2023 led the way, the sophomores (2025) were second, the freshmen (2026) were third, and the juniors (2024) were in last place.

The rice bags were delivered to St. Margaret’s and St. Faustina’s for their food banks. The Gleaners organization picked up their portion at DLS.

Blood Drive Nets 39 Pints of Blood

In early October, the DLS Medical Club held a successful blood drive, netting 39 pints of blood that will benefit 117 patients.

The Medical Club students handled set up in the DLS Bill Fox Gymnasium, as well as tear down at the end of the drive. Additionally, students handled two-hour shifts at the registration table, the hydration station, and the “After Care” table, where donors sit for 15 minutes and have a post-donation snack.

“Our nation is currently in a severe blood shortage,” said Mary Balamucki, DLS science teacher and Medical Club moderator. “Many hospitals currently have such low supplies they have to ration the blood that is available. Patients who desperately need blood can’t get it."

She added, "We wanted to help with that. Giving blood is a wonderful way to serve your community, and with service being at the center of what we do here at DLS, it was an easy decision to make. The boys in the Medical Club did a wonderful job planning and managing the Blood Drive. I could not be more proud of them and all the students who donated blood to help others.”

De La Salle’s Campus Bustles Amid Revival of Annual CBA Event

“The halls were rockin’ once again,” described Brother Ken Kalinowski, De La Salle Collegiate principal.

With COVID-19 causing two years of isolation, closures and cancellations, the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary’s traditional events, the Welcome Tea and the Sip & Shop and Craft Show, came back bigger and better than ever, said CBA president Julie Cichoracki.

The new school year began with the “Ladies of the CBA Welcome Party” in September which provided an opportunity for women new to the DLS community to meet the women of the CBA. “We introduced all of our events for the coming year to the new moms to encourage them to become active in our CBA events,” said co-chairpersons Michelle Jones and Paula Crippen.

This fun afternoon featured a delicious brunch, cocktails, scones, cookies, bundt cakes, and, of course, tea! “We continued tradition with our famous hat contest, teapot raffle and entertainment provided by DLS music students,” Michelle said. “Most importantly, friendships were celebrated.”

Paula added,” We were delighted to host a record 62 new moms who were among the sold-out crowd of nearly 200 guests.” These new moms have sons graduating in 2026, and they will be part of the 100th anniversary class of De La Salle Collegiate. Each new mom received a pen noting this remarkable designation.

Michelle explained that the committee met throughout the summer to put the details of this event into action and make the vision come to life. “After not having the Welcome Tea since before the pandemic, we finally brought it back for the 17th time,” she added. “The ladies transformed the everyday DLS cafeteria into an afternoon of delight with a ladybug theme.”

Each guest was also gifted with a beaded bracelet which read “Blessed.” The bracelets were donated by a generous sponsor. The CBA tradition of offering for sale a limited number of tea pots signed by CBA moderator Brother Pat McNally and principal Brother Ken Kalinowski continued.

Highlighting the afternoon was the presentation of a check for $7,600 to DLS president Larry Rancilio and Brother Ken representing the first half of the annual Co-Pilot tuition scholarship which the CBA funds each year for a deserving student. The balance is paid later in the school year.

The chairpersons added, “This event was successful thanks to our generous sponsors, many donations and our amazing and hard-working volunteers.”

Sip & Shop and 43rd Annual Craft Show

The biggest CBA fundraiser of the year, the Sip & Shop and Craft Show held in November, was a resounding success, said co-chairpersons Diane Polonis and Sherry Franz. “Our goal was to surpass last year’s attendance for both the Sip & Shop and the Craft Show and we are so pleased that we achieved both by 18 percent,” they said.

Friday evening’s Sip & Shop was a sellout with more than 750 guests enjoying a buffet dinner and beverages, a shopping experience and camaraderie. Nearly 2,900 shoppers attended the Craft Show on Saturday. The halls, gym and classrooms of De La Salle were filled with more than 130 crafters and 25 vendors. “With the Craft Show growing in popularity following the pandemic, we unfortunately had to turn away a number of interested crafters because of a lack of space,” according to the chairpersons.

“We wanted to add something special to the Sip & Shop this year,” added Diane, “so we invited Santa and Mrs. Claus. Their presence on our professionally decorated stage added holiday spirit. The guests enjoyed having their photos taken with the famous North Pole couple.”

Sherry added,” It takes a village of volunteers to plan and organize this event. We begin in May and continue until November. The event would not be a success without the great members of the De La Salle community including the students. We are so proud of our De La Salle young men. So many compliments were received from the crafters and vendors on how polite and how helpful they were all weekend.”

The chairpersons said they are also very grateful to the event sponsors including Ristorante Di Fratelli, National Coney Island, Lipari Foods, Randazzo, Christian Financial Credit Union, Srodek’s (pierogi), Fresh Greenery and Achatz Pies who all contributed to the successful event.

30 | THE COLLEGIATE | WINTER 2023 CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ AUXILIARY

Br. Robert Deary, FSC ‘61 is 2023 Dinner Honoree

The popular Christian Brothers’ Dinner, an annual event that brings together nearly 1,000 alumni, past parents, and friends of De La Salle Collegiate, is returning to its traditional location at Penna’s of Sterling.

DLS Director of Advancement Greg Esler said, “The Dinner has been a staple for our school for four-plus decades. It is a way of getting our alumni together to reminisce about their favorite memories and celebrate what the school has done for them.”

The 2023 Honoree is Brother Robert Deary, FSC, a DLS alumnus from the Class of 1961, who has served the De La Salle community as a science teacher and administrator.

He has had a lengthy career as a teacher, both in the United States and abroad.

His “tours of duty” as a Christian Brother also include time teaching for seven years in the Caribbean on St. Vincent’s Island, at St. Raymond’s in the Bronx (New York), and at Bethlehem University in Israel. Since 2018, Brother Robert has been in residence at the Brothers’ house in Warren, and each day he greets students and staff at the door.

“Br. Robert was a natural choice for Christian Brothers’ Dinner Honoree,” said DLS President Larry Rancilio ‘86. “He has meant so much to so many students and families at De La Salle. I meet alumni that he has taught over the

years who have expressed the significant impact he has made on them. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of the award.”

After several years leading the Christian Brothers’ Dinner Committee, Matt Loria ‘95, is taking a step back, and Chris Fett ‘90, an active member of the Dinner committee for several years, is taking over the chairmanship.

“A big thank you to Matt Loria for his work as the chairman of the Dinner over the past few years,” Rancilio said. “It is with much appreciation that we welcome Chris as our CBD Chairman. Chris has been a big part of the recent success of the Dinner, and I am sure the Dinner will continue to prosper under his leadership.”

A territory manager for Abbott, a medical equipment company, Fett works with cardiac rhythm management. He is also a member of both the Pilot Medical Association and the Pilot Business Association.

“Everyone at De La Salle is part of the brotherhood,” Fett said. “It’s up to us as alumni to carry on the tradition.”

Fett added, “The Dinner is the single most important event that supports tuition assistance. It is one chance to showcase to others who are not alumni, such as parents and friends of the school, what the De La Salle family, and the brotherhood, is all about.”

It is a great way to remind our Senior Class about the importance of giving back and making a difference. It is so nice to have numerous alumni and benefactors join us in celebrating our Lasallian Brotherhood. Jerry Zaccardelli's speech was inspiring for all of us.”

Kevin Quasarano ‘95

Kevin has opened a co-working space in Grosse Pointe Park, near the Grosse Pointe-Detroit border. Named “The Nott”, thenott.net, for its location at the corner of Mack Ave. and Nottingham Street, the three-story space features conference rooms, dedicated work stations that rent by the day or month, post office boxes, high-speed printers, and a kitchen/bar area.

He used the downtime of COVID to design the space, which is proving popular with workers ready to leave the house, as well as sales people and realtors needing a spot to meet with clients. The facility also features local art work.

While looking for additional locations, Kevin continues to operate his data analytics consulting business, making use of his dual degrees in computer science and accounting.

Pat Schluter ‘86

Pat hosted an indoor golf tournament in loving memory of Fr. George Charnley, who helped support Pat during his high school journey at De La Salle. Six foursomes played a best ball tournament at an indoor facility in Livonia.

Greg DeMars ‘00

Greg has been actively fundraising for a new tot lot to be named in honor of his late mother Phyllis, who passed away in early 2022. The tot lot, in Grosse Pointe Woods, will include a variety of equipment particularly suitable for special needs children. Groundbreaking on the project is expected to take place in spring 2023.

Greg has also been a generous donor, along with his cousins Peter T. Cracchiolo, Jr. ‘03, Matthew Cracchiolo ‘05, Andrew Cracchiolo ‘07, and Mark Cracchiolo ‘10. In 2018, the group established the Cracchiolo-DeMars Endowed Scholarship in honor of their grandparents, the late Peter and Connie Cracchiolo.

“My cousins and I benefited from our De La Salle education,” DeMars said. “We wanted to establish this scholarship to honor our grandparents’ legacy by supporting others who also wanted to attend a Catholic school, particularly De La Salle.”

Schluter praised Fr. George, who passed away in December 2021.

“Fr. George was an exceptional role model of giving to others and supporting those in need,” Schluter said. “Our family will always cherish the memories we had with him, and we are honored to carry on his mission of helping others.”

General Motors that lasted until his retirement in 1992 as Vice-President for Marketing and Communications. During this time, he took an interest in the city of Pontiac, and when Super Bowl XVI came to town, Jim formed a Host Committee that transformed downtown Pontiac into Bourbon Street North. It drew 150,000 revelers to the depressed city.

To try for something more permanent, Jim founded Pike Street Restaurant and Chimayo Restaurant, and also co-founded The Oakland Art Center. Pikes Street was named “Restaurant of the Year” by Detroit Monthly magazine in 1992.

“Our motto,”Jim says, “If you want our quality, you have to come to Pontiac to get it.”

Jim has led an active life as a traveler (all seven continents) and as a sportsman, often combining the two. He no longer flies, skis, or scuba dives, but still enjoys hunting, fly fishing, and golf.

After mainly living in the Birmingham/Bloomfield area, Jim and his wife, Janet, now live in Harbor Springs, in northern Michigan, where they host their four children and seven grandchildren as often as they can.

Jim’s brother, Terry, DLS 1957, joins Jim in saying, “De La Salle was a formative influence on our lives. Thank you, Brothers!”

Yearbook Sale

In preparation for the 100th anniversary celebration, Alumni Director Dennis Koch has been working with the Advancement Department staff to organize the archives, with staff members going through dozens of boxes of pictures and memorabilia.

Part of the process has been organizing extra yearbooks, and making them available for alumni purchase.

“We have been finding yearbooks in all kinds of places around the school, and now have a dedicated storage area,” said Koch. “While we will be keeping copies from every year for potential digitizing, we know that alumni may no longer have their high school yearbook.”

Alumni interested in purchasing a yearbook should contact Koch directly at 586.541.6221 or email dkoch@delasallehs.com

Sister Patricia Eeckhout, CDP Celebrates Milestone Jubilee

Congratulations to Sister Pat Eeckhout, who recently celebrated her 50th Jubilee as a member of the Congregation of Divine Providence (CDP). Sister Pat has been at DLS since 2000; she taught English until 2012, and then became a bookkeeper in the DLS Business Department.

The Detroit-area native attended St. Isaac Jogues Grade School and St. Gertrude High School - both in St. Clair Shores.

The CDP congregation staffed St. Isaac Jogues at that time, a major influence in her decision to pursue a religious vocation with that group.

Reflecting on her life as a Sister of Divine Providence, she said, “The only person who knew I was entering religious life was my mother. I was surprised that God had called me to be a religious. I had applied for a position with the Detroit Police Academy, but I felt God was calling me to serve Him in religious life. I decided to enter the Sisters of Divine Providence to see if this was a true calling from God.”

She added, “After I had lived with the Sisters for three months, I received an acceptance letter from the Detroit Police Academy. At that point in my life, I was committed to God and his calling me to a vocation. I never looked back. I am grateful that God called me to the Sisters of Divine Providence, and I continue to say ‘Yes’ daily to my vocation. I enjoyed teaching high school students for 40 years.”

Prior to De La Salle, she taught English at Bishop Canevin High School in Pittsburgh from 1974 - 1980, and at Bishop Gallagher High School in Harper Woods from 1980 - 2000.

“I also enjoy my ministry as a bookkeeper and meeting parents on a different level,” said Sister Pat. “I know I have been blessed throughout my life in my ministries and as a religious sister. I thank God for the ability to serve as a ‘Provident Woman’ with the Sisters of Divine Providence.”

For several years, Sister Pat has shared an apartment with Sister Kathleen Matz, also a CDP, who is now at De La Salle as one of the campus ministers.

Alumni Add Ornaments at Christmas Event

The 2nd Annual Alumni Christmas Ornament Event was held at De La Salle Collegiate Monday, Nov. 28.

Fifty-five class leaders, from 1947 to 2022, added ornaments representing their classes to the alumni Christmas tree. The tree symbolizes the rich history of our alumni, who have left a legacy that inspires present Pilots to aim high and achieve their goals.

This great night of community, fun, and fellowship, among the alumni, DLS faculty and staff, and the National Honor Society student volunteers, wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous generosity of Mark Wisniewski ‘83, who sponsored the event. Thanks to Mark for making this event a reality, and for all his support of De La Salle over the years.

Now we need your help to make this event a bigger and better one moving forward. If you represented your class, we ask you to invite another one of your classmates to attend the 2023 Alumni Christmas Event.

Thank you to DJ Hill ‘89, and Jet’s Pizza for providing the pizza for the event, and to Catered Coffee for supplying the hot chocolate.
