Wild leek is one of Missouri's first edible woodland species to appear in spring. It is very aromatic with a flavor of onion and strong garlic. It is mostly found scattered in the northern half and eastern Ozark region of Missouri. In ideal conditions where there is rich loamy soil and organic matter, wild leek can form large colonies both from seed and clonal offsets. The attractive foliage disappears by summer as the leafless flower stem emerges, topped with a cluster of white flowers. Various bee species visit for pollen and nectar.
