Exochorda x macrantha 'The Bride'
Pearl Bush
Type/Hardiness Perennial Shrub, Hardy
Flowering period Spring/Summer
Height 5-8ft/1.5-2.5m
Light preference Full sun/part shade
Soil preference Any, but well-drained
Sowing time/depth Any, barely cover
Arching sprays of small, fragrant, white flowers appear along the length of stems in late spring/early summer, followed by interesting star-shaped seed pods which tend to stay on the plant throughout the winter. I was delighted to find that this is a very easy plant to grow from seed.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow seed shallowly at any time of year in sandy compost, covering with no more than 0.25in/6mm sand or grit. Keep cool and moist (requires no artificial heat). Germination will generally occur in spring, but could be any time of year. Grow on in individual pots and plant out when large enough to compete with other plants.
