Rare painting of Jackie Kennedy by Andy Warhol on sale this week

Art nerds are abuzz over an extremely rare Warhol that’s going on sale Thursday.

The piece — known as “Jackie I,” depicting Jackie Kennedy in the moments before her husband’s murder — is so uncommon because it’s the only known piece by Andy Warhol that’s been stamp-signed on its front.

According to Sotheby’s, Warhol used a rubber stamp to sign his works rather than a hand-written signature because he “wanted to get away from style.” “I feel an artist’s signature is style,” he said. He stamped the backs of many pieces, but switched things up for “Jackie I.”

Bidding starts at $14,000.
