Brittany Murphy‘s father, Angelo Bertolotti, has died — nine years after the actress’ death. He was 92.

Angelo’s children, Jeff Bertolotti and Pia Reynolds, confirmed the news in separate Facebook posts they shared earlier this week.

Dad passed peacefully yesterday here in Los Angeles,” Pia wrote. “Thank you all so much for your prayers, love and beautiful words of encouragement. Please keep them coming as we walk through the next steps. ❤️”

Jeff honored his father’s life in a lengthy post in which he wrote Angelo was taken off of life support on Tuesday after a long health battle.

“This was an excruciating decision that was made by my sister Pia, my Pop’s best friend Al, and myself, along with a team of physicians at Holy Cross Hospital in The Valley,” he explained. “There was just no possible way, short of a miracle, that he was able to roll out of this extensive set of health problems. Anything short of letting him go would be cruel.”

Angelo’s death comes nearly a decade after his daughter, who starred in hits like 8 Mile, Clueless and Just Married, suddenly died at the age of 32 in 2009.

Murphy collapsed in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home on Dec. 20 while her mother, Sharon and her husband Simon Monjack, were present. Monjack died a few months later in May 2010.

Shortly after her death, the L.A. County coroner concluded that Murphy died as a result of pneumonia combined with anemia and “multiple drug intoxication” from prescription and over-the-counter medication.

“She was really sick with pneumonia, very anemic, and she was taking medication,” Coroner Asst. Chief Ed Winter told PEOPLE at the time, “and all that combined killed her.”

Winter also confirmed that no illegal drugs were found in the actress’s system: “It was only prescription and over-the-counter meds,” he said.

The circumstances of Murphy’s death cast a spotlight on Monjack just months before his own death. The pair met on the set of his film White Hotel (2001), and married in May of 2007.

Alternately grief-stricken, pointed and vague when answering questions about his wife and his own history at the time, Monjack refuted reports that Murphy was addicted to prescription drugs, despite the numerous pill bottles found at the scene. “My wife was not abusing prescription drugs that I was aware of,” he told PEOPLE after her death.
