Newly Remastered Super-Deluxe Edition of Sound of Music Soundtrack Treats Fans to 40 Unreleased Songs

The hills are alive with The Sound of Music again!

Nearly 60 years after the beloved musical first debuted in theaters, a new super-deluxe edition of the movie's soundtrack is being released later this year.

Craft Recordings has not only remixed and remastered the original collection of 16 songs, but added more than 40 previously unreleased tracks. Also included are 11 never-before-heard alternate takes from the cast, led by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

The box set — which will release on Dec. 1 — contains four CDs, as well as an accompanying Blu-Ray Audio disc featuring the movie's full score in high-res audio and a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original soundtrack.

The set also includes new, in-depth liner notes from director Robert Wise's associate Mike Matessino, who remastered the soundtrack from the original multi-track tapes. Matessino also wrote a lengthy essay for fans, colorfully recounting the making of the film and its timeless music.

“You will hear what you’ve heard before — famous songs with the mellifluous tones of Dame Julie Andrews leading the way — but the experience has been transformed beyond what the 1965 soundtrack album offered with extensions to the songs, a brilliantly arranged underscore, and even some segments not used in the completed version of the film," Matessino explained in the essay.

The album also will be available in deluxe two-CD and three-LP triple-gatefold formats featuring the movie's full score. In addition to the wide vinyl release, a special “Picnic Meadow Green” color pressing — limited to just 500 worldwide — will be sold online exclusively at CraftRecordings.com.

The original 16-track album from 1965 also will be re-released on standard digital, HD digital and Dolby Atmos, along with several international versions on standard digital.

The 40-plus unreleased tracks on the super-deluxe album include “The Little Dears,” which combines “I Have Confidence” and “My Favorite Things”; “New Governess"; and “The Gazebo,” an extended piece of underscore.

As The Sound of Music approaches its milestone 60th anniversary in 2025, members of the movie's cast enjoyed a touching reunion last year. Five of the actors who played the Von Trapp children joined Andrews, 87, onstage at the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony in June 2022.

Nicholas Hammond, Duane Chase, Angela Cartwright, Debbie Turner and Kym Karath surprised their onscreen governess onstage as she was honored by her peers. Andrews later reflected on the emotional moment, telling Today she and her castmates remain connected all these years later.

"We do keep in touch, but not on a really regular basis," she said during an appearance on the NBC morning show. "I mean, Christmases, maybe birthdays and certainly get-togethers, but we just bonded so hard that I think we're family anyway."

She also spoke about her Sound of Music leading man, Plummer, who died in February 2021 at 91.

"I adored [him]," Andrews said. "We were friends for years."
