Kelly Osbourne: My Lavender Hair Color Has Become Me (Plus: Why She Shaved Her Head!)

Check out our exclusive interview with Kelly Osbourne where she discusses dying her hair purple and her latest mane change

It’s hard for us to remember a time when Kelly Osbourne was not sporting her lavender locks (she’s had the color for four years now), and she feels the same way, saying she’s never felt more herself than with her brightly-hued do. She recently sat down with PEOPLE to discuss her most recent mane change and what it was like when she first debuted her purple hair.

“Basically my color has become me. The first time I dyed it and looked in the mirror, I saw myself and I felt like me,” she told PEOPLE while stopping by to promote Wheat Thins Popped. “I’ll never be a natural girl. I’ll never be normal or simple. The most insulting thing someone said to me was to call me ‘beige.'”

It’s true that Osbourne loves to be anything but ordinary (case in point: her barely-there eyebrows), and the TV personality’s dedication to blazing her own trail has paid off. Nearly four years after dyeing her own do, other celebs including Nicole Richie and Ireland Baldwin (not to mention countless style bloggers) have also given the purple hair trend a chance. When asked how she feels about seeing other girls rocking the shade, she says that she is totally supportive. “They don’t get that I’m not that kind of girl that will sit there and be like, “You have the same hair as me.” I don’t own this color; it’s just become a part of me.”

Recently, the Fashion Police judge shared a picture on Instagram of her latest hair update, sporting a bob with shaved sides, which she explains was a result of feeling too “sedate” with her bobbed hairstyle. “I cut it into a bob — [and] no disrespect to anyone who has a bob, but I just felt like I should be picking up my kid from soccer practice in a 15-passenger van.”

So why go for the bob in the first place? Turns out it wasn’t intentional — a stylist accidentally mixed the wrong blend of hair dyes, and chunks of her hair started falling out. “I never mind when stuff like that happens because I get to be inventive and come up with something new,” she said of the tress disaster. “I told [the hairdresser] that I kind of wanted to look like, ‘Alien chic meets mental patient that’s just had electroshock therapy. You know when people have hair burned off at the sides?’ And he was looking at me like I was insane, but he was like, ‘All right, we’ll try it.'”

And lest you think she’s found a do and sticking to it, Osbourne says that this half-shaved look may be just the beginning. “Every day I’m looking at it and thinking it needs to be more, it needs to go further back and needs to be shorter. But what I love about it is it’s so diverse. When I have to be normal, I [flip my hair in front] and no one knows.”
