A terribly underutilized native shrub, ninebark is named for the numerous layers of bark which progressively peel in a manner similar to birch. White clusters of flowers are followed by red seed heads. It thrives in any soil type and is a perfect choice for naturalization or even stabilizing rocky sites. 'Diabolo' is the trade name for the cultivar 'Monlo,' developed in Germany for Monrovia and typified by its dark red leaves, which quickly mature to deep purple.
