Triple Bunk Bed – Ikea (sorta) Hack

I am a mother of three living in the burbs of DC.  If you know DC, then you know that our houses are quite small so finding ways to maximize your space is a must.  My husband and I had been brain-storming for months and months trying to figure out how we would build or acquire a triple bunk.  Buying one was out of the question since most will cost close to $1,000.  I am one of those “there has to be a way to make it work” kind of people.  I knew there was an easy solution out there, I just needed to find it!  Guess what, I did!  All you need is an Ikea KURA bed and an Ikea TROMSÖ.  Both of which I found on Craigslist for about half the cost.  The great thing about this is that you don’t need to alter or “hack” either.  They are both separate from one another which I think is safer than cutting up bits and pieces of other beds to create a franken-bed.   -love, jes

So here is how you do it:

1.  Build your Kura.  (Assembly instructions for the Kura- http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/customer_service/assembly/K/K10123996.pdf)

2.  Leave one of the bed slats on the Kura loose on one end to make room for the leg of the Tromso.

3.  Assemble the Tromso so that one leg goes thru the open slat.  The Kura will fit inside the Tromso.  (Assembly instructions for the TROMSO – http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/customer_service/assembly/T/T70019954.pdf)

4.  We decided to leave the ladder for the Tromso off.  My 6 year has the top bunk and can easily climb to the top without the ladder.

NOTE:  The Tromso comes in a couple of different heights.  Make sure you get the one that is 81 1/8″  High.
