Review: ‘The Sound of Music’ at Mumbai’s Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre Served Up Top-Notch Production, High-Quality Performances and Memorable Moments

Although the 1965 musical drama film The Sound of Music starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer is hugely popular amongst Indian audiences, for the first time ever, the award-winning Broadway musical made its way to our shores courtesy of the newly opened Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai. The show launched on May 3rd and will run on until June 4th at NMACC’s The Grand Theatre, which holds a capacity audience of 2,000 people.
With an evening show every day except Monday and an additional afternoon show on the weekends, fans have been flocking to and selling out NMACC to hear classics such as “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Edelweiss,” the titular song and more.
Directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien, the nearly three-hour program was stunning with its sensational production from the props to the lights, costumes and most importantly sound, ably bringing a world-class show to Indian shores.

The entire cast were phenomenal in their abilities as theater performers and singers, belting out one amazing note after the next without ever missing a beat. Jill-Christine Wiley, who played the lead role of Maria Rainer, was exquisite in all her scenes, from being with the nuns at the Nonnberg Abbey to teaching the von Trapp children about music and, of course, falling in love with Captain George von Trapp.
Speaking of the von Trapp children, all seven of them were one better than the other at making the audience laugh, feel emotional and also be taken aback by their abundant talents at such a young age. Other members of the cast who played characters such as the nuns, Rolf Gruber, Elsa Schraeder and Max Detweiler were also exemplary in their roles.
It was fantastic to see a production of this scale hosted in India where every detail was carefully looked into, making it an extraordinary and grand experience.
