Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen

Roald Amundsen was a famous explorer. Some of the things he discovered are RV Belgica frozen in the ice, the Northwest Passage, and the first person to fly to the north pole.

Early life

Roald Amundsen was a fourth son to Jens Amundsen and Hanna Sahlqvist.

He grew up in Norway and had always wanted to be an explorer. However, his mom wanted him to be a doctor. He was learning to be one but when his mother died, he quit that degree.

The Northwest Passage

There is a lot of ice in the Northwest Passage. People had been trying to get through the Northwest Passage for years. There are still boats trapped in the ice. Since he got through the Northwest Passage he proved you can get around the top of North America.

  • Roald Dahl, who wrote Matilda and lots of other great books, was named after him.
  • At one point, he was almost killed by a polar bear.
  • He discovered the Northwest Passage.
  • On another expedition he reached the South Pole and stayed there for days before the trip back.

Roald Amundsen Was…

A leader,

A  persistent person,

An explorer,

A thinker,

A hard worker,

And much more
