Looking for a charming, easy-to-grow plant to add to your garden collection? Look no further than Digitalis purpurea, also known as Common Foxglove or Purple Foxglove. This biennial or short-lived perennial herbaceous plant is native to Europe but can be found throughout much of temperate Europe and North America. While the plant is toxic and should be treated with care, it is also the original source of the well-known heart medicine digoxin, due to the cardiac glycoside digitoxin found in its leaves, flowers, and seeds. In the garden, the Foxglove is much-loved for its purple, pink, or white flowers, which form a showy, terminal, elongated cluster. The leaves are simple, spirally arranged, and covered with woolly, gray-white pubescent and glandular hairs. Its foliage forms a tight rosette at ground level in the first year, while the flowering stem develops in the second year. If you want to grow this delightful plant, it's easily grown from seed or can be purchased as potted plants in the spring. Give it part shade and moist but not wet soil, and you can enjoy its beauty for years to come.
