If you had an iPod back in the day, then you’ll be interested to know that one has just sold for an eye-watering amount.

Yes, a first-generation Apple iPod has just fetched $29,000, which equates to approximately £22,800.

The sale took place on 4th August via Rally Alternative Asset Investment, which is a platform that allows investors to buy and sell equity shares in collectible assets.

However, before you go digging through your drawers to find your old iPod in the hope of a cash windfall, hold your horses.

The iPod in question was first-generation and in its original packaging, unopened, so unfortunately you’re not likely to get quite as much dosh if you try to flog your beaten up old MP3 player.

The item was originally a Christmas present purchased by the parents of a teenager all the way back in 2001. It was bought at an Apple store in Texas for $399 (£313) but, for whatever reason, it didn’t get opened.

Rally co-founder Rob Petrozzo explained: “He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with it, so he put it on a shelf, and then, inevitably, time passes,”

The iPod’s owner rediscovered the iPod while sorting out some stuff after his father died. “It truly is a time capsule,” Petrozzo said.

The discontinued item first re-appeared on the market back in 2021, with 5000 shares at $5 a share split between 360 investors. Last week, a buyout offer of $29,000 saw a private investor acquire all of the shares and gain exclusive possession.

And this isn’t the only retro Apple product to go for big bucks. Last month, a factory sealed 2007 4GB iPhone sold for a ridiculous $200,000 at auction in Louisiana.

In related news, a slightly older relic dropped jaws with its valuation of on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow recently.

Queen Victoria's knickers came with an amazingly high price tag!
