Growing: Prefers moist, well draining, sandy loam soils, in shade to full sun.
Edibility: Edible root, raw or cooked. Often cooked in soups or with rice until gelatinous as a tonic food.
Medicinal uses: Dang Shun is the root of Codonopsis pilosula. It is wildly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is sweet and nutrual and used to tonify the qi. IT also tonifys the spleen and lungs, and nurishes the blood. It is a gentle tonic that increases energy levels and helps the body adapt to stress, similar to Ginseng but has a milder and more gentile effect, and does not over stimulate the body. It is a sweet, warm, soothing herb that is taken as an energy tonic/adaptogen and for issues like fatigue and weakness. It acts mainly on the spleen, lungs and stomach, raising secretion of body fluids and blood sugar levels, and stimulating the immune system.
