About this item

Incarvillea delavayi is also known as Hardy Gloxinia. This perennial makes a great cut flower, and it has clusters of lovely pink trumpet-shaped flowers and dark, ferny leaves. It reaches about 16 inches in height and loves full sun to partial shade.
Hardy gloxinia is a 16 inch tall perennial growing in USDA zones 5 - 8.
It makes a beautiful addition to any flower garden or border adding lots of color for a long bloom season of late spring through summer.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Incarvillea has a long tap root, so good drainage is especially important during the winter. Also, for winter survival, mulching is recommended for zones 5 and 6.
Sowing Rate: 3 - 4 seeds per plant. Start the seeds indoors 4 – 6 weeks before the last frost is expected. Lightly cover the seeds and keep them continuously moist. With temperatures around 68F, germination usually takes place within 21 days. Spacing is 12 inches apart.

Hardy Gloxinia (Incarvillea Delavayi Rose)

Hardy Gloxinia is a lovely, showy flower that is excellent for beds and containers. It grows readily from seed and can be overwintered indoors in cold climates where it would otherwise die. Incarvillea Hardy Gloxinia has dark green, fern-like leaves that accentuate the trumpet-shaped, rosy-purple flowers. Hardy Gloxinia is especially well-suited to the West Coast climates. Gardeners that live in regions with hot, humid summers may have difficulty growing these plants.

Hardy Gloxinia care includes regular watering and deadheading the spent blooms to encourage continued flowering. This plant not only grows well in normal garden applications, but it also can function as a rock garden plant. The stems of this plant are strong, allowing the flowers to be used for cut arrangements.

How to Grow

Sow these seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the end of frost season. Using starter trays or small pots, sow 3-4 seeds per plant into a starter mix.

These seeds benefit from light, so very lightly cover the seeds with soil or fine grit. Keep the seeds moist until germination, which will occur in 2-3 weeks under proper conditions.

Seedlings can be transplanted outdoors once they have 2+ sets of true leaves and all frost danger has passed.
