Biography from Grev Wedels Plass

Frants Bøe is one of our gallery's few still-life painters and he is considered the most significant of them. This genre had been popular from the late 17th century, and was especially developed to the great heights of Dutch painting. It's out in Europe, but this genre had many performers here in Norway, where Bøe was one of very few.

He sold many paintings to the art associations in Norway, essentially with motifs of flowers, fruits and conchs, occasionally also of animals. ... When Bøe returned to Bergen in 1845, he had acquired a name like flower and silhouette painter.
In 1848, Bøe was given the opportunity to travel to Paris with an artist scholarship. He stayed there for eight years. In 1851 he participated with a picture of a drueklase on the Salon, the image was purchased by the French state.
In 1857 Bøe returned to Bergen. Around 1860 he lived for a while in Nordland, but from 1864 he lived permanently in Bergen.

Bøe was a very popular painter in his home country and in England and America, where he sold many paintings. He belongs to a small group of Norwegian painters who, after studying in Copenhagen, did not go to Düsseldorf, but directly to Paris. In Copenhagen, he was influenced by the Danish fresh and bright colorite, while in Paris he acquired the virtuoso virtuosity of the French salon painting. ... The lighting in Bøe's pictures is often dramatic and effective. The nature and substance of the objects are reproduced with great sensitivity
