Sisyrinchium is a large genus of perennial flowering plants in the family Iridaceae. Native to the New World, the species are known as blue-eyed grasses and though not true grasses, come in varieties of flower colors other than blue. Several species in the eastern United States are threatened or endangered. The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, based on the species Sisyrinchium bermudiana.
Sisyrinchíon is the Greek word, recorded by Pliny and Theophrastus, for the Barbary nut iris (Iris or Moraea sisyrinchium), and refers to the way the corm tunics resemble a shaggy 's goat-hair coat.
In the Eastern United States it is a common find in woodland or moist meadows. It is a herbaceous perennial and grows to about 12-18 inches. The flowers sit upon blades that resemble grass, but it is actually closer to an Iris then a grass. Loves moist ground. Blooms from around May to July. It likes dappled sun or good shade and not full Sun.
