Poppy - Meconopsis Horridula seed

Poppy - Meconopsis Horridula also known as the Prickly Blue Poppy is an endangered species and is a flowering plant that has basal leaves arranged in a rosette. The open-faced flowers come in shades of blue or a reddish-blue color that are up to 3 inches across. The stalk that bears the flower is bent, so the flower hangs over and droops. The stem and pedicels have spines that are straw-colored on their surface. The leaves are up to 10 inches long and are elliptical or narrow-oblong shaped. The  surface of the leaf is quite interesting, it is covered with yellowish or purplish spines that grow from purple wart-like structures. It has a blooming season that ranges from late Spring to early Summer, will grow between 18-24 inches tall, and can be grown in full sunlight only in cool areas, otherwise can be grown in full or partial shade. When growing these plants in the garden, its important to keep the soil moist in the Summer. These flowers will attract Butterflies and Bees to your garden while being resistant to Deer and Rabbits. They are native to China and do well in beds and borders in the garden. Meconopsis Horridula grows in rocky areas and grass slopes at altitudes from 3100 to almost 6000m, close to the limit for vegetation at these altitudes. These plants can be grown in slightly shaded or sunny, cool areas, in meadows and rocky regions. They can also grow with other shrubs. They require plenty of moisture while growing and do not need protection from winter. Since they grow on high altitudes, they can tolerate temperatures as low as -10 degrees F.  The seeds germinate when sown in mild heat conditions or a warm bright spot under the sun. Germination of seeds is slow but reliable when sown in a cool place during spring. Plants like well-drained neutral soil. The young seedling has heart-shaped leaves.

I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine,Florida. All seed are NOT alike!  There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!

SEED GERMINATION TIP!!!!!!!

ONLY GERMINATE A SMALL PORTION AT A TIME.

DON'T PUT ALL YOUR MONKEYS IN A BARREL.

Good Luck and Happy Planting!!!!
