Farrah Fawcett Foundation donates to local cancer organization
To celebrate what would have been the Corpus Christi movie star's 70th birthday, the Farrah Fawcett Foundation made a big donation to an organization in her hometown.
Melissa De La Garza, senior marketing manager of the American Cancer Society in Corpus Christi, said Wednesday the foundation donated $10,000 to the organization. The money will help the group finish their new patient services room, which will now be named after Fawcett.
"We wanted to honer her donation and do something in her memory," De La Garza said. "We want to know that the foundation is giving back to her community."
Fawcett, a graduate of Ray High School, was best known for her role in "Charlie's Angels," but she was also a sculptor and an artist. After a long battle with cancer, Fawcett died at age 62 in 2009. She would have turned 70 on Thursday.
Fawcett was dedicated to raising cancer awareness and chronicled her own battle with the disease in a 2009 documentary, "Farrah's Story."
"Corpus Christi is important to us," said Christine Romero, the foundation's director of communications. "As (Board President) Alana Stewart would say, 'Farrah and I are Texas girls.' That meant a lot to both of them."
Another store is honoring Fawcett's memory as well. Rocket Fizz, a nationwide franchise of soda pop and candy stores, is selling a Farrah Fawcett cream soda, which was the star's favorite drink. Corpus Christi's Rocket Fizz plans to begin selling the drink Friday, and part of the proceeds will go toward the foundation.
