A superb plant for the back of the border, with attractive pinnate foliage and bearing in summer, on very tall stems, large, Scabious-like creamy flowers with a subtle hint of palest yellow. We have a real soft spot for this flower, somehow managing to be both majestic and understated. It is fantastic for cutting and must be one of mother nature's best kept secrets. 6ft (1.8m)

    Cephalaria gigantea

    Magnificent plant

    Reviewed by Barrie Higham on

Germinated very easily and grew strongly in our peat free compost. Planted out in some tough spots - windy site, lots of competition from wildflowers and dense planting - yet it has powered in and is now bursting into flower. Beautiful in bud, flower and seed head. The bees love it and so do we!

    Did not flower first year…

    Reviewed by Ellen James on

But have been spectacular this year! Admired by neighbours and adored by the bees! Over 8 feet tall and covered in flowers these have given me the height and movement to the garden I needed. I like the soft yellow colour which blends with many other plants. Now late July, the flowers have faded and left wonderful seed heads which I will leave for the finches to see if they enjoy them as much as the verbena bonarienis seed heads. I am so pleased I gave this plant a try!

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that the plants did not flower in their first year, being first year flowering perennials we would expect them to. However, with the unusually cool and wet summer of 2021 this may have been a factor. We have contacted you directly to find out more. It sounds like they have put on a wonderful show for you this year and hope they continue to do so for many more years. The Chiltern Seeds Team.
