Meconopsis betonicifolia, 'Hensol Violet'

Blue Poppy, Himalayan Poppy

Meconopsis betonicifolia, 'Hensol Violet'
Price: £3.45
Coming largely true from seed is this much admired form of the type species with rich purple-violet flowers. Perhaps rather surprisingly, these blend in well when grown mixed with plants of the ordinary, type species when they seem to make the blues of the latter seem even bluer! 5ft (1.5m)

This genus contains some of the most exquisitely beautiful of all flowering plants. Not the easiest of plants to grow, they do best in moderately rich, woodland soil; moist yet with perfect drainage. However, do try them - we guarantee that when you succeed in flowering them, there will be celebrations and the neighbours will be invited in to see for themselves.

Germination Instructions

Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained soil-less compost. Cover with a fine layer of grit or sieved soil. Water from the bottom. Keep in a light place, greenhouse or cold frame, ideal temp. 15°C. Never allow the surface of the soil to dry out. Germination takes 2 weeks-several months. If germination has not occurred after 8 weeks cold stratify. Move to 4°C. for 6-8 weeks then return to warmth. Repeat process until germination occurs. Once germinated damping off can be a problem. Prick out seedlings when they have 2-3 true leaves. Pot on as needed. Acclimatise and plant out in summer or autumn or the following spring depending on size and climate.

Growing Instructions

Thrives in areas with cool damp summers. Prefers moist well-drained soil enriched with leaf mould in a partially shaded site with wind protection. Never allow the soil to dry out. May benefit from fish, blood and bone fertilising. Plant 10 plants together for maximum impact.

Cultivation Instructions

Cut down to the base in late autumn. Mulch in spring with a well composted leaf mould and add a slow release fertiliser.
