    Whilst not being quite black, the silky, fully double blooms of this variety are of the deepest purple and quite stunning. One of our favourites. 3ft (90cm)

    The very aptly-named Peony-flowered Poppy with gorgeous, very fully double flowers. Try combining colours to make wonderfully eye-catching displays.

    For an easily grown splash of colour, few flowers can equal poppies with their flowers produced in profusion throughout the summer. Sow and forget, nearly all will flower in the first year from sowing.

    Elusive plant

    I am yet to get this to grow. Some germinate then die, others don't germinate at all. Looked lovely at Broadway manor where I first spotted it

    Germination Instructions

    Seeds best sown directly 5mm deep in 30cm long drills which are 15 cm apart. Germination will occur when the temp. reaches +20°C. Germination takes 7-14 days. Seedlings will appear in rows 6-8 weeks after planting. Thin seedlings to 20cm spacing. Can be sown indoors into moist seed compost cover lightly with vermiculite. Propagate 12°C. Usually germinates in the dark. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed with 50cm spacing. Can be sown in autumn for flowering the following year.

    May require staking. Cut and come again variety. Cut flowers regularly to encourage growth and to prolong flowering window. Deadhead if you do not want it to self-seed.
