This otherwise attractive denarius of Julia Domna features a rather ghastly-looking Pudicitia, who looks as though she were wearing a gas-mask. Truly hideous: Julia Domna, AD 193-217. Roman AR denarius, 3.20 g, 17.6 mm, 7 h. Rome, AD 211. Obv: IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG, bare-headed and draped bust, right. Rev: PVDICITIA, Pudicitia veiled and stolate, seated left, head and torso facing, right hand on breast and left hand resting on chair and holding scepter. Show a really nice full facing head (obverse or reverse). There r nice 3/4 views but full face usually look bad when made and worse when worn.
The following coin humiliates the great goddess Athena as well as Empress Julia Domna. I dislike to post. But I have no choice. The thread is this thread.
This thread is off the rails hilarious! I can't tell if the OP reverse reminds me more of Cthulhu or the flying spaghetti monster??? Excellent coins! Here's one that no matter how many times I think about cleaning I cannot. The placement of the dirt appearing to be exciting right under Nemesis dairy air is just to hilarious for me to remove: Vespasian (AD 69-79), AR Denarius (19mm, 2.95g), struck AD 73. IMP CAES VESP AVG CENS ,laureate head facing right / PONTIF MAXIM , Nemesis advancing right, pointing a caduceus at a snake below. RIC 544; BMC 97. Former Kairos Numismatik Though if you want a coin that just gives me the heebie jeebies, here she is: Antiochos I Soter Seleukid Kingdom (281-261 BC). AE (15mm, 2.49g). Smyrna or Sardes. Helmeted head of Athena facing / BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ. Nike standing left, holding wreath and palm frond, Monogram to outer left. SC 315a; HGC 9, 167. Former: Kairos
I posted this in another thread, but the Goddess is described as very beautiful. Unfortunately, she was depicted during the archaic period of coin manufacturing... DALI Kolchis 5th-4th C BCE BI hemidrachm 11.5mm 1.8g Archaic female head - Georgian goddess Dali - Bull head border SNG Cop 98 She was the Hunting Goddess of the Kolchis / Colchis area (think Jason and the Golden Fleece). Is the poor goddess covering or uncovering her face? Herennia Etruscilla, wife of Trajan Decius. AR Antoninianus (4.68 gm). Obv: HER ETRVSCILLA AVG, diademed and draped bust right, on crescent. Rev: PVDICITIA AVG, Pudicitia seated left, holding transverse scepter and drawing veil. RIC IV 59b (Decius); RSC 19.
