We know how important it is to keep drainage systems maintained and unblocked, to prevent flooding damage to properties.

But manhole covers are often overlooked as important parts of the infrastructure, and while most property owners understand that they are responsible for maintaining their drains and gutters, manholes covers are often overlooked.

What does a manhole cover do?

Manhole covers have an important function and are important to maintain. It lays on the surface of the ground to protect the opening to an inspection chamber. Inspection chambers are a critical part of a drainage system because they provide the access for inspections, cleaning, unblocking and repairs of the drainage system that runs beneath.

If a damaged manhole cover is left unrepaired it can lead to damage to the drain it is there to protect. It can also become a serious health and safety risk for people walking over them.

Who is responsible for manhole cover repairs?

Before 2011, legislation relating to the responsibility for repairing the drainage system wasn’t as clear cut as it is today, but now the responsibility has been clearly defined.

If the manhole cover is on a road or public footpath, the local water authority will be responsible for the repair. If the manhole cover is within the boundary of your property, connects to your property and only services your property, then you will be responsible for any repair.

How can manhole covers be repaired?
