Introducing the Graphic Novel
Many people scorn graphic novels as childish comic books. One reading of Craig Thompson's "Blankets" will let one know graphic novels and comic books are two different genres, a second reading will let one know they are reading a master at "yuugen" or mystery and depth. Huge splash pages make this novel a great work of art! Thompson's novel is very different than other graphic novels because each of these gorgeous pages were painted by him over the course of 4 years. They tell the true story of his first love. When interveiwed, he said he wished to not show first love, but "the first time of sleeping next to someone." (Don't worry, it's not pornographic.) It also explores his religeous crisis: what does one do when they feel lust? ... Many people scorn graphic novels as childish comic books. With interwoven Bible stories, Plato's cave, and many other influences in young Craig's life... it is apparent why the simple liking of another was so revolutionary to this guilt-ridden teen. A must read for all graphic novel fans, and a great way to be introduced to the genre. (It's also won many awards!)

"Blankets" was my first real encounter with a graphic novel; and it was splendid. Thompson's beautifully depicted illustrations combined with his witty perspective created not only an enjoyable read, but left me wanting to read more. He's not an author who gives too much away, he allows you to ponder over the words he has written and guess at the missing links. The story follows a young boy through adolescence and his first real love. The uncertainty and newness of a first love is depicted beautifully. It is most certainly a down to earth, real life experience that we've all been through, and Craig sheds light on those tender moments in a way that is simply stunning.
