Remember Wayne and Garth rockin’ to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody in their AMC Pacer? They may have been a little offbeat, but few cars from the 70s were so wonderfully weird, the Pacer fit right in with the characters from Wayne’s World. And even fewer cars could hold a candle to the Pacer, except perhaps its older brother the AMC Gremlin.
Jerry Seinfeld once said about the Gremlin “It was built to compete with the Ford Pinto and Chevrolet Vega, which were horrible cars… And, compete it did!!!” According to Jon Stewart, whose first car was an AMC Gremlin; the car was so repellent, that the car epitomized “the sound of virginity.”
Now a Gremlin for being as looked down upon as it was, is kind of cool in a unique nerdy-chic way. It is like that “nerdy” person in high school, who over time grows into his or her own skin. And, in that way Gremlins are kind of cool, maybe not next to a Ferrari, but next to a Chevy Cavalier, it might appear intriguing.
Place a 1990’s Chevrolet Cavalier, a 1990’s Ford Probe, and a 1970’s AMC Gremlin, side by side and some people wouldn’t see the distinction. But, between these three cars, a few people might notice unique features that set the Gremlin apart. They might appreciate the pastel colors, or the odd shape that the Gremlin came in, or that it is just so wonderfully weird. Or some people might find the optional denim or Levi jeans interior kind of cool. We get it, and we realize not everyone will appreciate an AMC Gremlin or Pacer, but we do because of that nerdy-chic factor that these cars represent.
Many people are starting to realize the appeal of the Gremlin and Pacer, and last weekend a low mileage example of a Gremlin X similar to this car sold on eBay Motors for $12,491. This led us to wonder, are Gremlins and Pacers collectible and cool once again? Or for the first time ever? Only time and bidding will tell but there definitely is some sort of market for people who want a wonderfully weird car like a Gremlin. Just make sure if you buy a Gremlin to follow the advice of the feature film by the same name and, “Avoid bright lights, don’t get the car wet, and never feed it after midnight.”
