Canna tuerckheimii is a perennial in the Cannaceae family. Its native range is from Mexico to Ecuador. It is solely called the Giant Canna Lily. This species of Canna can grow to 15 feet tall. The stems alone can reach up to 11 feet tall. The leaves are massive, almost 3 feet long and 16 inches wide. The flowers are orange-red, popping out the top 2-3 inches long. They are in bloom from August until October. The seed pods are also bright orange-red, carrying 3-8 seeds. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade in the afternoon with average water needs. Zones 7-11

Germination

With a nail file, rub seeds until you break through the outer coat. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 75-85F. Germination is in 4-30 days.
