Variegated Plantain (Plantago Major Variegata) - The cream and green marbled leaves form a basal rosette of oval leaves. Small green flowers on narrow spikes in June - July. Self-seeds easily, remove flowers if self-seeding is not desired. Plant this interesting novelty for a walkway or pathway planting in the sun to open part shade. This mound of variegated plantain leaves is great just to marvel at; however, variegated plantain leaves also work well for bee-stings! Have a mosquito bite? Just pick a leaf and rub it right on the bite to find relief! Or, soak leaves in vinegar or alcohol for a highly effective bug bite tincture.
Plantain is also a highly nutritious wild edible that is high in calcium and vitamins A, C, and K. The young, tender leaves can be eaten raw, and the older, stringier leaves can be boiled in stews and eaten. The seeds are also edible.
