I have several clumps of these beautiful iris in my yard (Zone 7A). I started with just a couple of plants at least 30 years ago and I'm pretty sure they will still be alive and well long after I am gone. The blooms are about 3-/12" across and on stems approximately 18-22" tall. There are usually two bloom per stem. The sword shaped leaves turn brown after the first killing frost. They will come back year after year.

Once you have them started, they form clumps and in 2-3 years, you will be able to divide your original clump and replant it in another area of your garden. I planted a small clump in my daylily bed about 3 years ago and it is about three feet across this year. All my seeds have been pre-chilled to mimic their having gone through a winter so they will be ready to sprout and grow.


They bloom in April in my yard about 4-6 weeks after the last frost. I recommend that you sow your seeds in a pot and transplant to their permanent position in your yard 2-3 months later, keeping an eye on them to keep them moist until they "take hold." IF planting in the Fall, I recommend planting the seeds directly into the spot where you want them to grow. From then on, don't worry about them. They are tough little customers.
