The Norwegian hitman sustained a fractured foot last season and he has never fully recovered from the knock.
His latest attempt to return to action - as a substitute against Yeovil last weekend - was unsuccessful and he suffered an adverse reaction to the injury which will now have to be operated on.
Leeds boss Dennis Wise told the club's official website: "We'll be patient with him and he's got to be patient too.
"If he's back in six or eight weeks that's fine. He came off the bench last weekend and he is capable of making an impact.
"It's been a difficult time for him, but hopefully this will help now."
Meanwhile, Jermaine Beckford has signed a new two-and-a-half year contract at Elland Road.
The 23-year-old goal ace will now stay with the Whites until 2010. Beckford's strike partner Tresor Kandol is also believed to be close to penning a new deal.
