SCOTCH LOVAGE SEEDS

Ligusticum scoticum ssp. scoticum

ORGANIC

Native to the Atlantic and Arctic seacoasts of northern North America and Europe, this perennial species has been foraged for food and medicine for millennia. Lush and stout Angelica-like plants grow to no more than 1’-2' and are festooned in the second and subsequent years with pretty white umbels on burgundy stems that will sometimes grow to 3' in ideal locations.

All parts of Scotch Lovage are edible. Tender spring growth is especially delicious and aromatic and may substitute for fresh celery or parsley. Leaves may be harvested as needed throughout the year. Happy established plants are very ornamental and an excellent choice for edible landscapes.

Best in moist but very well-drained soils. Scotch Lovage tolerates salt as well as some shade. Here in the Hudson Valley it is most happy and attractive with only morning sun. The dappled shade of taller species may be sufficient in gardens with full exposure. This species is very unlikely to establish itself in coastal regions south of Long Island, or in any interior region without some coddling. Fertilize and mulch generously with seaweed.

Though some seeds may germinate promptly at cool room temperature, they will germinate most reliably with stratification. We have had the best luck sowing seeds into pots of moist soil and allowing the pots to overwinter outdoors in a sheltered location. Seeds will begin to germinate during the first warm days of very early spring. Take care to keep soil moist, but not waterlogged. Seeds are fragrant and sweet, not unlike those of Fenugreek, so take care to protect from critters.

Prick out germinated seedlings to grow on in deep 6" pots. Water frequently and fertilize with dilute seaweed extract. Early morning sun or dappled shade is sufficient. Transplant well-rooted plants to their permanent location when soils are still cool in spring, or wait to plant in autumn.

Extremely hardy, but not very tolerant of heat. Best in cool coastal climates or forest gardens.

Packet contains at least 20 seeds.
