MHG socket chisels

MHG socket chisels

There are various ways of fitting a handle to chisel.

The most popular are chisels with a tang. As a rule, the tang has a conical shape with a pointed tip. This tang is driven into the predrilled handle until it is firmly seated. With this configuration there is a risk that the handle will split if pounded repeatedly with a mallet. To prevent this happening the blade-sided end of the handle is fitted with a metal ring or ferrule. On chisels used for lighter work this ferrule is all that is required by way of reinforcement. However, a chisel struck firmly with a hammer, eg, for producing deep mortises, requires a second metal ring, called a hoop, this time at the top end of the handle.

Less popular are socket chisels, because the manufacturing process for such a chisels is far more elaborate. The conical socket, however, has the big advantage that a handle with the same conical shape at the blade end cannot split when pushed home. A few taps with a mallet or even just the ball of your hand is all that is required for a tight fit.

TMHG socket chisels are supplied with two handles. The handle without the hoop is for lighter work where the chisel can also be struck with the ball of your hand. Change to the second handle with the hoop for conventional work with the chisel using a hammer.

The socket chisels from MHG are relatively large and thanks to their robustness are also suitable for carpentry applications. The primary bevel is 30°, the additional micro-bevel increases this angle by a small amount. This micro-bevel extends no more than about 0.5 mm from the cutting edge, more is not necessary. Because you don’t have to hone the entire bevel you save a lot of time whenever you grind the chisel. The larger bevel angle also avoids the cutting edge getting chipped, especially if the chisel is treated to heavy blows with the mallet or lots of leverage is applied. The two oiled handles are made of ash. The blade has a hardness of 61 HRC and is ground to a fine finish, but as ever we recommend honing the blade on a fine water stone (grit grade 3000 or more). The side bevels are ground down to the back of the blade, which makes for clean edges and corners when producing deep mortises.
