cozy, delicious, sweet, smoky. extremely addictive. 9/10 not 10/10 simply due to lack of versatility

Proeris

Good if you wanna smell like you've been chilling around a bonfire 👍

tuqqaa98

smells like a caring loving cozy father figure

bigtool_4u

Reminds me of a summer lover I had, he was such a grumpy arrogant prick but he was pretty fun in bed. He would wear this to impress me because he knew I am a perfume freak. I never told him it was a weird choice for summer lol

pauldlc

If the Fireplace is in a marshmallow factory then yes, it’s by that fireplace. This is sickly sweet and reminds me of no fireplace I have ever sat by. No smoke, just marshmallows, candy floss and caramel. If you want something truly fireplace vibe try Le Labo Patchouli or Akro Smoke. This is way too mass appealing and gentle. I imagine Mr Blobby to smell like BTFP it’s that fluffy and sweet.

perfumernathz

Exclusively a winter-time, cold weather fragrance. I wouldn't necessarily classify this as a perfume option, or signature perfumer rather an addition, or spacial spray. These fragrances are to evoke emotions and memories as it does in a very personal way for each individual person. This fragrance is a wonderful replication of a fireplace, the slightly sweet note of a warm woody home, to the spicy chestnut and clove of wintertime spice. I grew up with many dried herbs and spices in the wintertime, scattered round, in addition to open fires, and I've never smelled something so perfectly similar to those memories before. And somehow there is a slight note of the smokey, woodsy sweat that comes with working outside and coming in the house afterwards. Absolutely surprising and personal.

Lilah_lilah2023

It smells like the woods and, well, like a fireplace. Now... Is it something I ever wanted to smell like? Not really. Is it original? Yes, it is. Overall, definitely unique. It is very unisex and more suitable for winter. Great longevity and projection.

samuelares

One of the only fragrances that made me say wow.

10/10 - Exclusively a cold weather fragrance

Britannico1980

Wonderful fragrance, a must have! DON’T belive in fake reviews about the arabian clone suggested as most similar, it just dirty water and far from the original one. Just try and buy this, don’t waste money like I did

apictureofher

The first fragrance I fell in love with. Smelling it now, brings back not so good memories. But that doesn’t distract the fact that this a beautiful, sweet, smoky fragrance. I think it’s perfectly rated among the community.

willnpc40

I LOVE this fragrance, but PLEASE be careful of who you order from!! I bought mine off Ebay (I know I know) and it is a fake, they have sold 100s of them just from one seller. The scent is gone in under an hour, the bottle has many defects....and the real stuff is nuclear and lasts for hours and hours.

So I am wondering if some of the bad reviews here got fake clones as well.

Anyway, this is really really nice, if you get the real thing.

9/10 - Cold night gem

By the Fire Place by Maison Martin Margiela, is a designer masterpiece. When I first smelled this fragrance on a tester strip, I was kinda taken aback by what I was smelling. I thought that the opening smelled like the inside of a firework and that the opening of the fragrance was too brash for a designer perfume. I dismissed the fragrance and moved on to other warm winter scents. A couple of months later I was shopping for fragrances with my significant other and I stumbled across By the Fire Place again. I wanted to smell it again because people in the fragrance community love this fragrance. So I tried it again in-store and loved it. It was like a switch went off in my nose, it was warm smoky, woody, and spicy. It was so good that I ordered a bottle from a discounter that day to buy it. It is my favorite winter scent to wear and it is my girl friends too.

alialiok906

Overhyped, Givenchy Gentlemen is better

AbraLaCabra

Lovely smell, burnt wood right off the bat, then dries down into a sweeter smell.
Some people told me it smells like burning cigarettes (on the opening). My girlfriend says that it smells like a cruch to her (incense heavy).
Perfect for the colder weather, I tried in a warmer one, but I don't like it that much, sadly.
Performance is pretty good, at least on my skin. However, I can see some folks with underwhelming performance on their skins.

StringerSmell

I like it. I might be the first to say this but it, at least to me, smells like a mild version of Opus XIV Royal Tobacco. The smokiness is very similar but instead of getting punched in the face by smokey tobacco for 17 hours with the Opus XIV, you can wear this for a day and not suffocate yourself. It is strictly a winter scent though.

ghostori

Great for fall, but difficult to wear. I do love this smell though, and I’ll hold on to my travel spray until it’s done.

I think it’s funny that I buy these very singular fragrances, and end up pairing them with the same everyday jeans/tshirt combo every time. What am I doing? I should be in flannels or a period outfit or something for this fragrance. I need to get out more fr

HomophobeJewishNazi

Smells like straight cilantro, literally it’s just cilantro, there is no depth, nothing.. just cilantro!!

FemaleDog

Burning wood/campfire smell is very light at first and goes away in 10-20 minutes, drying down to vanilla-scented marshmallows. It has good staying power and lasted through the night but goddamn, it don't need to cost so much to smell like marshmallows.

AbdullahK

Upon first spray, the scent of burnt wood smoke is distinct in the opening notes, along with a strong sweetness in the heart. Great for sitting outdoors in cold weather 🌨️, but not suitable for the gym or dates. There's a hint of vanilla when you sniff deeply. It’s woody and oriental, not quite me, somewhat doesn’t represent my personality. It feels like a fragrance more suited to religious figures rather than a casual outing.

After a full day, as it stays on the skin, it turns into very sweet vanilla. Nice and delightful, but extremely heavy to the extent that it becomes bothersome to me. At night, or after a few hours, the lingering scent on the skin is luxurious and sexy, absolutely gorgeous, and I love it, but the initial smokiness is off-putting, so I need to find an alternative.

In short, it's sugary and very sweet but heavy, and the woodiness is annoying. Before it chokes anyone else at the gym, it will choke you, the wearer. 🔥🌲🍂

Fragrancebrother

Personally I like the fragrance overall but I think it could have better longevity for sure. The initial smokiness does fade, which isn’t a problem until the scent all together changes to a somewhat faint sweetness. First couple hours are great

jow012

This smells exactly like "The Christmas Song" line that says "chestnuts roasting on an open flame"
It doesn't have as intense of smokey notes that I was expecting. The smoke really dissipates quickly. It's actually quite pleasant and rich and settles down to a woodsy vanilla. Chestnuts should be used more often in fragrance, it's such a lovely scent. It's a very seasonal scent and evokes a specific mood. This one is for collectors or holiday lovers.

aroma.veiled

I find myself unable to align it with the imagery of a bonfire. Instead, it presents as a luxurious amalgamation of rich, profound woodiness interlaced with subtle notes of smoky vanilla, devoid of any overpowering boozy undertones. This fragrance emerges as a masculine counterpart to my beloved Vanilla 28 by KAYALI, nearly achieving signature status in my olfactory repertoire. Consequently, it stands as one of the two scents I unequivocally intend to acquire for my future spouse, Insha'Allah.

In my imagination, this fragrance embodies the quintessence of sophistication, perfectly suited for a tender yet resolute man. Its essence permeates the post-work shower ritual, sets the mood for intimate summer evening rendezvous, and seamlessly transitions into the embrace of winter's chill.

May peace be upon you.

ieatplasticbottlecaps

idk if it’s just me but I can only smell burning wood, very polarising IMO

Plogic

Very warm, enveloping scent but I found it becomes too cloying, sweet, linear, and gourmand. I don’t dislike the fragrance, per se, but I personally don’t want to smell like this myself as a man in his mid forties.

orestes13

Tried it at an airport. It smells like superambers... Not bad but nothing exceptional either. There are similar things out there at a much better price.

BigBearHK

I bought it from a MMM Store, sniff b4 purchase. It got me totally. The chestnutty, vanilla & woodsy notes are really intoxicating.

Not meant for hot wet season. It's name is a perfect match to the scent profile.

fatiher123

It wasn't what I expected and the smell bothered me after I tried it. It really smells like burning wood.

DistractedZach

very warm and ambery

Upahara

Maybe im a fool, but I hated this. It quite literally smells like you've been sitting next to a fireplace for hours and now smell like burnt wood. There is absolutely nothing attractive about this, that being said, its not a disgusting smell, not at all, it just doesnt smell like a perfume, you may aswell sit by a fireplace and get the same wood smell for free. I was actually told by a random person at work that this was their favourite perfume, so I wanted to try it myself since she hyped it up so much - and I honestly dont understand why its a favourite amongst everyone. Its very unisex, not feminine at all, there's nothing that makes you go "oh wow what are you wearing?", it just makes you smell of smokey, burnt wood...thats it. I dont understand how this is a legitimate perfume. Perfumes are meant to make you smell nicer, not like an artificial campfire. The best way to describe it is if you like the intensity of the spice smell in Poison, and the intensity of the powdery smell in Tabu, then you'll love the intensity of the burnt wood smell in this.

dustkiller

kinda basic tbh. not harsh or unwearable at all. the smokiness doesn’t last long. and then it just smells like one of those vanilla roll-ons you can get at whole foods for like $9. or you used to, they’re really small and so people would steal them a lot and then they stopped carrying them in some stores. anyway i was kinda unimpressed with this, and i think it’s probably overhyped.

astralmonad870

This is not a real perfume but a vibe if you want to smell like a campfire. I hardly wear mine but I have a dupe from Noted Aromas that I just keep in my wardrobe because it's an interesting smell to have in a bottle.

TheFraganist55

I have only tested it on a strip, but it's insanely smoky. Yet, for some reason, I am pulled in by it. I don't know if I would wear this myself, but it has a very complex scent profile. People say Eros Flame smells smoky... please, I object (but that is a debate for another day). If you think Flame is smoky, you will probably have a coughing attack after smelling this.

maddie2503

I love this sooooo much. Super smoky vanilla. Unisex but I like this more on men. So beautiful in the colder months

MysticalOdors

Might remind someone of stronger with you

wallah_cuz

Absolutely amazing scent, despite other reviews saying it smells too smoky I absolutely love it. It seemlessly combines the top and middle notes perfectly to create a warm fireplace type smell, while drying down to a more vanilla scent.

10/10 from me.

adriennb

It's very woody and smoky in the opening but dries down to a sweeter, but still woody vanilla. I got this for christmas and I couldn't imagine a better scent for that season. Now I've retired it for the following warmer months, but I will definitely reach for it again once the weather gets cold again, and especially during christmas.
I haven't smelled the candle yet, but I agree with those who say that this scent might work better as a candle. I still love it as a perfume though.

islandgirlmaranda

This opens with a smoky wood bonfire and sweet burnt marshmallows you'd come to expect to smell at a backyard bonfire, but the smoky woody part is only there for the opening, it dries down to a beautiful warm vanilla and toasted/roasted chestnut scent. It reminds me of two things: Marshmallow Fireside candle from Bath and Body Works and Better Homes & Gardens Roasted Chestnut wax melts. I adore this perfume and will have it in my fall/winter rotation! Pair this with Beach Nights or Bonfire Bash from B&BW!

OceansideGuy93

I sampled this today at Sephora and I’m not a fan. It has like a burnt caramel or butterscotch smell to it, not what I was expecting at all. I’ll pass.

FragPW123

They have a candle that smells amazingly just like a realistic fireplace. I was so impressed with the candle that I got excited for the spray.. but this smelled nothing like the candle, nor like being by the fireplace.

The smell isn't bad, but it you want "by the fireplace" vibes then get the candle version! This leaves me feeling very disappointed.. but this scent is better as a candle anyway now that I think about it.

Edit- @Angagu YES!! You nailed it, "I can imagine this being 10/10 as a candle, but it’s just ok as a perfume."
100% agree!

avaugo

Was my signature scent for two years–– super yummy smokey sweet scent but just became artificial to me over time. A little goes a long way but the scent doesn't last super long.

angagu

A bit too heavy/smoky for my personal taste, but I find the woodiness in combination with the roasted chestnut and vanilla scent to be so intoxicating in the air. I can imagine this being 10/10 as a candle, but it’s just ok as a perfume.

ArtConcierge

It was OK. Didn't really work for me. A bit too literal of a by the fireplace/campfire experience. Scent felt clingy, sticky, and almost sooty. If you do happen to love it, a little will go a long way.

zman1

Absolute banger- I get sweet vanilla and toasted marshmallows. I don't get the smokey accord everyone mentions. I'm getting about 4-5 hours at arms length (3 sprays) before it becomes a skin scent. This will be a daily driver for me in cooler temps! Highly recommend!!!!!

temnomera

Damn i craving for chocolate marshmallow smelling this fragrance

tylerss20

There's niche and then there's niche. This is a well constructed winter fragrance, that's very evocative of Christmas time. This is such a specific scent that it's hard to see many instances when I'd wear it, but it is memorable.

Aleksandr_Artemev

Very nice realistic scent. I wouldn't say it's hard to wear as some other reviewers said. I can definitely pull this off on a nice fall evening. Very calming and unique scent.

SXPRA.FG

I bought this fragrance off Temu and let's just say, it really made me feel like I'm by the fireplace... as I sprayed it on the back of my neck, I immediately felt a sharp burning pain, I looked in the mirror because I thought I had sprayed it on a rash, I stared at my mirror in horror at the sight of my neck on fire. It smelled pretty nice though, smells like a nice warm cup of coffee being drunk from a woody cup under some pine trees. I continued to put on a few more sprays as I screamed in pain and agony, my skin now shriveled to the bone and all that was left of me was my skeleton and a pile of ashes beneath me. Atleast i smelled the best in my class 10/10 fragrance definitely recommend 😁

bubbrubb

Both my wife and I wear this and love it. Be careful not to over spray, side/back of the neck and wrists do it for me. Too many sprays and you’ll smell like a BBQ and get tired of it quickly. I highly recommend this fragrance to people who want to smell cozy.

saltairrustdoor

tumultuous relationship with this one. i’ve loved it for a long time, and it is 1000% a compliment getter, but if i spray even a DROP too much i give BBQ grill. maybe it’s how thick and engulfing the balsam and cashmeran are, maybe it’s my chemistry, IDK

tavinc69

This is a great fragrance. a little back story, I had just bought jazz club and then I had looked on the reviews on it to see if everyone is on the same page as me but everyone was saying by the fireplace is better. so I bought by the fireplace and I do not regret it.

the notes are accurate, you get chestnut and vanilla with a little burnt marshmallow but what stands out the most when you first spray it is the pink pepper which makes it a little unique. but if you do not enjoy pink pepper as a note do not worry because it drys down and eventually the woods, chestnut and vanilla overpower it.

This is a great woody/winter fragrance and has alright/moderate longevity and projection. it is worth the price and for me gets a 9.5/10.

JourneyG

The cloves and pink pepper in the opening notes are overwhelmingly strong and made my head hurt.

LK-Fragrance

Smells like a pleasant campfire and marshmallows mixed with chestnut and light creamy notes. Male fragrance but not very masculine.

Mgrijalva

Very nice scent , gives me cozy / winter
I’m at a wood cabin burning some wood.
This can be unisex . The only complaint I have is longevity . It’s ok.
This is a more masculine version of vanilla woods by the seven virtues .
Rate: 7.2/10

malake

I find that it leans more masculine and so I don't like it on me

Gillzathrillza

Burning wood and vanilla as a feminine fragrance? On paper, this shouldn’t work for me, and yet it’s absolutely frickin’ delicious in reality.

It’s yummy, warm, evocative and delicious. It’s pretty linear but that’s a benefit because it’s lovely from start to finish.

It lasts a decent length of time and it’s pretty full on. I’m a huge fan and I’ve just finished a bottle - it’s first on the list for next purchase (not that I need any more perfume…).

needed_a_new_obsession

Dear By the Fireplace,

Thank you for the experience of having me change my mind so much in just a few hours:

In the first seconds, you teleported me into that moment at the medieval festival, when I sat at the fire after nightfall, wrapped in my wool and rough linen outfit, drinking honey wine, the smoke being blown into my direction, scratching my eyes.
You soon led my mind into that cosy aftermath where I crawled into my sleeping bag, where the "smoky clothes" smell mingles with ages old sweat...
...and after some hours I woke to a horrible hangover, where this old sweat is perceived through quite a headache, and where anyone would desperately wish for a shower.

I still think I'll wear you for the next medieval festival occasion, just for the fun of it, and also for the promise of this well worth hangover.

Kanella2013

Perhaps one of the most if not the most accurate name for a perfume. By the fireplace!
It definitely evokes memories. Perhaps that's why it's called Replica because it replicates pleasant memories from the past.
When I first smelled it I traveled back in time when I was a kid and we used to have guests during the winter and we were sitting in the living room by the fireplace. There were always some ladies that used to wear heavy, spicy and slightly old-fashioned perfumes.
Late in the evening after they were gone and the fire was going out you could trace in the slightly smoky air of the room their heavy perfume. That's what it smells like to me.
I can't say that it is my cup of tea but I would be very unfair if I reviewed negatively this perfume just because it's not my type. If I close my eyes I find myself back in this room.
I recommend to all perfume enthusiasts to try it. It's cozy and comforting! It is definitely worth a try! 😊

swyintenslyGLAZER

love this shit so f goood

SiddhantSuryawanshi

A wave of tranquility washes over me, banishing the weariness of the long journey. There's something almost magical in the way this place feels like home, a sense of belonging I haven't felt in years. It's more comfortable than the fire's heat... a soothing balm for my wandering soul.

A memory flits through my mind. Laughter fading against ancient stone walls, a flash of bright silk against a dusky twilight, the captivating scent of something sweet, with a touch of fire. I try to hold onto the shape of it, but it dissolves like mist, leaving only an echo of joy, and longing.

Perhaps it's the gentle snowfall, or the way the fire throws dancing shadows on the wood grain...but my heart stirs with a quiet ache, a bittersweet pang. But, it's not unpleasant. There's comfort in it, a promise in the air as crisp and cool as the winter twilight.

My eyes flutter open. It's not a memory at all, I realize, but a premonition of sorts. A whisper of something to come... of laughter, and love, and a sweetness tinged with the intoxicating scent of woodsmoke, spice, and a touch of wild blossoms. I smile, settling deeper into the blanket, my heart filled with a yearning anticipation. It all began with this scent, this symphony of fragrance, and it seems there's a whole, beautiful future waiting to be discovered.

Sniffona

Smells similarly to Vanilla Tobacco by Tom Ford, and there is an exact Zara dupe.

eh86055

I think there must be counterfeits of this. Blind purchased a 100 mL bottle and no smoke at all--pure vanilla and sweetness. Batch code 62V70YX. I'm going to buy another sample to compare, I'll update once it's received.

contristo

This was my first replica, and I didn't expect it to be so literal lol. I quickly fell in love with the unique nature of this fragrance however - lots of smoke, warm vanilla underneath, christmasy tree, and so long lasting. Can I be so honest rn… I usually wear this by super directly putting it behind my ear and on my jacket so I appear as though I’m super cool and was out on the town the night before. But she gives like that!!!

ElliePerfume

Really is gorgeous, however I think I’d prefer it in a candle. To me it smells like you’re sat in front of an old fashioned fireplace & it’s burning, and you’re sat drinking a hot chocolate with a little bit of brandy in it.

First time wearing this I sprayed too much it made me feel ill, so put me off wearing it for a long while. But I do love it when the times right. I’ll wear this a lot to bed or in the winter months. A very cozy, real life scent. Makes you actually smell like you’re in the room with a fireplace and the smell is just around you instead of on you. A lot stronger than most replica fragrances & very unique. Also think I’d love this scent on a man ❤️

atrumistake

If I'm gonna be honest, I didn't think it would live up to all of the hype but it totally did. I only sprayed it once on my wrist as I simply wanted to see how it smelled on me, and GOD I loved it. From the very first sniff and onward it just reminded me of smores. The scent doesn't seem to change over time, just fades, which is perfect because it means it smells amazing all day. It's the perfect balance of sweet and earthy, and the smokiness is less smoke and more of the literal fire. Out of all the MM fragrances I've tried so far, this is my absolute favorite, which is surprising because I thought Whispers in the Library was the perfect fall signature for me. Love this fragrance, am really disappointed I didn't test it before the weather started warming up lol.

sidesalad

A tad too realistic, but my gosh do I love it when winter rolls around and I can pull this out. Confession time: I'm actually quite scared of real fireplaces and really prefer this imitation.

deya_alothman

رئحة العطر جميلة ومميزة ، يمكن وصف العطر بإنه نسخة مدخنة من سترونجر وذ يو انتنسلي ، العطر كان بحاجة لفوحان أعلى لتكتمل الخلطة

FragranceSal

Late to the party on this one, but really enjoying this scent! At the top a burst of smoke, then bourbon, marshmallow and brown, almost maple, sugar. Multi-faceted in a rare way in that it is cozy, sexy, complex and sweet all at the same time. Not overpowering and I love wearing this, it's like my own wonderful secret I am carrying around with me. Also, not headache inducing for me like Whispers in the Library (as a bibliophile and given that it indeed smelled like a library with rare old books, that truly made me sad). If I had a partner at the moment, I would insist he wear this for date night, bask in his presence and then eat him up with a spoon! Surprisingly, is not terribly long lasting but I used it sparingly as I am a woman and while fairly unisex, it is in some ways a masculine scent.

sugarh1ccup

This does smell just like a bonfire, but I love that. Perfect for the winter, I am actually sad that I won't be wearing it again until then.

NightshiftGhost

Sprayed it on my wrist at the store and spent the whole day sniffing it, here are my thoughts:

It DOES smell like burning wood. However, I only detect the burnt shell of a chestnut, not the fruit itself (yes, they are fruit, I didn't know that till now!). Longevity, on skin, is crazy long! I washed my wrist 2 times and I can still smell it.

I find the scent so heavy, too heavy it could be stomach turning. With not much depth nor complexity. Just burnt wood. Smells close to cheap incense.

Definitely sample before buying.

OlfactoryMaroon

One sentence: RELEASE AN EDP/PARFUM

CHRISTIANDIORDIOR

Love this scent, not mass appealing unfortunately but for special occasions like camping, it's a beautiful one to put on. Will likely buy a bottle eventually, wish it wasn't edt.

vnyasova

loved wearing this in winter, fits with the cold weather and hot drinks and Christmas gatherings, see ya next yearr

notthatfussed

lives up to the name 1000%, some will like that some will not. i love it. it smells like PDM althair has been sprayed on burning wood.

Lilium86

If we remove the very romantic name of this fragrance, for me it's exactly the smell you get in church here in Italy at Easter or during communions, when incense is used. It's exactly that. The perfume should have been called: 'In church at Easter.' I don't know how anyone would want to smell like smoked all day, it was really a ridiculous disappointment. After a few minutes it calms down but it still smells like clothes and hair that have been near a fire and reek of smoke

0xrafae

Turning on Romance Mode in a Tesla shows a big fireplace on the entire screen. If you spray loads of "By the Fireplace" by Maison Margiela around, will the car catch on fire?

TWN2RBO

The first time I smelled this was at Sephora, sprayed it on paper and was way too smoky for me. Years went by and I actually put it on skin for another try, and I fell in love. It makes so much more sense. Went home ordered a bottle and when it came, I sprayed it on skin then went to a doc apt. I had 2 nurses going on and on about how good I smelled. Moral of the story, noses change over time and this fragrance must be put on skin for you to judge it. Massive difference. It’s not near as smoky on skin and the vanilla / spices come forward with a woody base. It’s just magnificent and not expensive like most of my fragrances. Love it.

AJPkayla

I’ve tried various clones of this (Madj, Ace of Spades), and nothing compares to the real thing.
There is just something about this one where the smokiness of the guiac wood is done just right.
It’s completely dead on unisex with the sweet vanilla, almost leaning it slightly feminine, but then the smokiness and chestnut vibe bringing it back to neutral.
It reminds me of sitting around the fire indoors or even walking around outside on a winters evening going from shop to shop with spices in them and a distant wood fire wafting a little smoke in the air.
The performance is very good. Actually I think MM has this one dialed in nearly perfectly. Lasts on my skin quite awhile but not strong at all. However you get getting little whiffs of it as it teases your nose. Not strong on skin but lasts, especailly on clothes. Smelled it days later on a shirt I wore for a little bit.
This one will be a staple of mine in the Fall and Winter. I think it would make a really nice Christmas fragrance as well. Bought the small 6ml bottle for trial. Definitely worthy of getting a bigger bottle and I did just that.

I wanted to love her, but I couldn’t! I’ve tried to give By the Fireplace so many chances, but it smells like musty armpits on me. I don’t know how else to describe it, but the bonfire smell is too strong on me, it just ends up smelling like BBQ and gasoline, or armpits. I am so jealous of those that can smell the toasted marshmallow scent. It may not work with my skin chemistry, so don’t let this review sway your decision. Test it in store is all I can say. Maison Margiela fragrances are demanded to be noticed by those around you, so test out the scent beforehand. A lot of their scents are strongggggg hunny, and this one is no different.

Shuggie

I can’t describe it other than it smells like burned wood, not really the scent I usually go for but my boyfriend loves it on me. It does smells nice but I feel like it’s not as versatile and only appropriate for special occasions. Date nights? Sure. Gym or office, absolutely not.

LeoIsCologneki

I finally got around to sampling this and the whole replica line and man are they not good. I don’t understand how anyone can wear any of them.

I was super excited to try this one but it just smells like a funky burnt piece of marshmallow. I honestly would probably like this as a candle but I would never wanna smell like this.

ellis_negron

Ever had a bonfire and come back smelling like a fire? This is that, plus a ton of vanilla. I love it, perfect for the holidays, the chesnut is there in the opening and middle, but very slightly. The dry-down is just vanilla and that burnt-ish woods.

Jennswen

By the Fireplace:
I bought a travel spray from fragrancenet.com and I like it.... a lot !
This one is hard for me to explain because I am not getting "Fireplace" at all. To me, this is an overbaked, slightly burnt, vanilla marshmallow melted on a gingersnap cookie. However, I think of it as a non edible gourmand. It has an interesting incense note that takes it away from an ultra feminine cookie and makes it a cozy warm perfume.
I don't feel like it projects, but it lasts all day.
I think I need a full bottle of this 😉 .

henderson_the_rain_king

ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT it's my favorite fragrance find of 2023. on my skin the top notes smell like the turpentine liquid they put in fireplaces and grills, then it opens into a warm roasted marshmallow scent, and then quiets down to sweet vanilla. lasts all day, great sillage, love love love it. the only downside is - it's difficult to wear it in spring and summer, it's quite specifically the cold seasons perfume.

Kyliemor

I’m on my third bottle, this was my first ever niche fragrance, the first time I smelt this, it made me feel
Like I’ve lost a memory that I needed to recover, this is a Smokey deliciousness for winter.
It reminds me of being by the fire place during fall or winter.
The only down side to this fragrance is the short projection
Skin scent 5-7hrs

schnoorzoky

This really does smell strongly of fireplace/campfire smoke. Well done but not how I want to smell most of the time.

NOSEYBODY

The Logs in Your Fireplace have all burned down to Smoldering Embers. You take a hand full of Caramels & throw them onto those Smoldering Embers & shake a bit of Clove on for good measure.

The Chestnut, Vanilla, & Peru Balsam combine & create an accord that smells like Sugar & Milk cooked down into Caramel.

For the life of the fragrance all I get is smoked wood & caramel. My bottle is from 2015 so it has a pretty strong projection & Sillage.

Sure its synthetic, a bit immature, & borderline cloying. But that aside its a compliment monster. For me By The Fireplace is a dumb reach when I'm running errands, & It's never failed to garner compliments.

ashakhboz123

To the guy that wears this to my gym please stop, i don't wanna smell a fireplace every night

Stoicchild

They have definitely changed the formula. Before it used to smell like a very sharp and balmy version of Decadence by Marc Jacobs. I own Decadence, so before I literally referred this as the male version of Decadence, because I found it very masculine. Now it's been made unisex. Somehow, it's more wearable now, but it's still lighter than Decadence.

Dougy_fresh

Good, but it smells a bit too much like alchohol

Nandoiscool

i wanna tap isi ngl.

Hello ladies, complete and exact equivalent of Schu Emilio Schuberth for women. To me, the “fire note” is simply the frankincense and myrrh from the church. That's why this scent is the same for me as Schu. This is also a sweet seductive scent that smells like a mysterious mystical Italian church. The “by the fireplace” is a wonderful scent, but Schu is even more delicious. And it is much cheaper and lasts a very long time.

The name given to this perfume actually leads us astray. It could also have been called “By the Priest” or “@ the Altar” or “By the Confessional” or finally “In the Roman Church”.

Histamine

This is creative and unique and if you want to smell like you have been eating marshmallows by a campfire all day, then you can’t beat this. It is an interesting representation of this ultra smoky genre. I also used to have Raghba wood intense that is mostly a dupe of by the fireplace. But that one was just horrible and so synthetic that I could not stand it. By the fireplace is much nicer and combines gourmand notes with the dominating smoke note. I definitely can understand why people like this. So, I respect this but I unfortunately I do not like it for myself. I have spent a lot of time by burning wood when I was younger and the smell of smoke on clothes and hair was something we tried to avoid. So for me the smokiness does not equal coziness, but I do understand that for many people it does. To me this scent suggests that I should take a shower. I am trying to say that I find this fragrance to be polarising. I can’t quite figure what kind of situations this could be worn even by those that like this fragrance. But it is unique and certainly worth trying if you thing you like this type of scents.

exotic.vsp

i have never personally worn this tho i have smelled it, it smells so amazing like an actual fireplace also get a bit of wood and vanilla. the smell was so pleasent and i am thinking of buying it.

aednk015

The most realistic perfume I smell, feel like burning some medicine and the base note looks strange but in the good way.

Chloerose666

10/10.

I absolutely love this, my favourite out of the four Replica line I've tried (Beach Walk, On a Date, When the rain stops), but would love to try literally all of them (got a discovery set in my basket somewhere!)

Worn several times to get a feel for it and was tested in Jan/Feb/March in the UK so pretty chilly out.

Starts out very smoky and fireplace-y, very musky and warm and cosy. The dry down is phenomenal on my skin and smells like the most glorious chestnut, cashmere, woody vanilla which combines to give an almost chocolatey vibe. Big love for this one and definitely FB worthy. Intrigued to try it in warmer weather to see how it reacts.

Bluecollarfresh

It's okay. Not as smoky as I would like. Does not really give off fireplace vibes. More like holiday vibes. Tobac from Maison Alhambra is 90% similar for 20 bucks. Got it as a gift so not sure what I'm gonna do with it.

blackjack3

One of my first fragrances. By the Fireplace is smoky gourmand with some nutty nuances, which I love. It’s very unique.

vladdarius

Is longevity and sillage really that bad???

Omar_505

One of the best Maison Martin fragrances. Smells like smores and wood. Great for winter and fall and maybe even spring nights. Smells like camping in a bottle.

woomanmoomin

I blind-bought this over Ameer al-Oudh Intense Oud for the smoke, the complexity and the s'mores vibe--that Peru balsam seemed like a promising touch--and because my gut told me that the Lattafa was more likely to have me smelling flat-out like a casualty of a fire at a corn syrup refinery. This is lovely. I don't have very much experience of other fragrances anywhere near this ultra-representational but I find it hard to imagine that there can be that many out there that do much better at representing what they aim to represent. It doesn't smell all that Christmassy to me, whatever that means, but maybe it would if my concept of Christmas were all about hanging out with the ghost of Nat King Cole, chestnuts roasting on an open fire. There's no big mulled-wine or baking spice vibe here, no blast of Christmas conifer, etc., but all that cosy fire stuff definitely is depicted here, extremely effectively.

I suspect that the fragrance would have a much higher rating if it weren't so hard for many people to imagine any more than about one scenario a year where wearing it might make sense. I have no problem with it. Yes, it is smoky, but not obnoxiously so. Yes, there is a kind of bitter, caramelised undertone, but again, it is in no way confrontational or whatever. This stuff will really not have you reeking as if you've just come back from Glastonbury or an agricultural stubble fire. There is just the right level of sweetness and light here to balance out the dark stuff. If you're the kind of person who routinely applies perfume as if macing a bear, this scent may be too much for you, but if you fancy an enveloping olfactory experience and apply this stuff with restraint, you may just adore it. Will it get you countless compliments? Maybe not. But actually I would love to smell anything this great on anyone.

If you *are* the bear mace type--if you like to spray something super strong and then keep spraying it, and spraying it some more--you may find this fragrance's roughly average performance (and perhaps especially the sillage) underwhelming. To me, however, it makes perfect sense that it isn't over the top. With a scent profile like this, I do not need the kind of performance level that would have me smelling as if I were picking a fight with the smoke alarms at home here.

I give this about 4.7 out of 5.

girlfromipanema

smells like straight up burnt wood throughout its duration - i mean props for living up to its name but i don't want to smell like i just smoked a pack

Lincoln_666

One of my favorite winter scents. Perfect for a snowy day, really exudes a cozy and comfortable vibe. The opening is the biggest con of this scent. Expect to smell like smoke with a hint of gas station for the first 20 minutes. After the dry down, it is a perfect smoky, sweet, vanilla, toasted marshmallow scent.

femininehorror

I remember when I was a girl, I would smell the ash and smoke on my hair after sitting by a bonfire and wish that I could have it as a perfume. I fear this scent is as close as I can get. It's definitely more vanilla and spicy than I would like for this purpose, but it's still delicious and probably protecting me from going full ashtray.

ryanmnsr

this literally smells like the smell of the smoke of burnt wood being stuck to your clothes. Beautiful opening, sickening dry down. Go for jazz club.

fleskhjerte

This is my absolute favorite winter/autumn fragrance. Its really strongly Smokey at first, but settles down into a raw comforting woody vanilla

adl83

This smells like ashtray. Horrible.

HotelCartel

Got it! Finally bought it 2 weeks ago. Maybe not for everyone but THIS WORKS. Longevity is above average. This is not ordinary, it smells different.

I suspect it can be layered/combined.

joh7_1

Love this cologne so much. best outta the whole replica line in my opinion. Smokey, woody, etc. nothing wrong with this. 10/10 but not many people are going to like it. In my case i had this cologne for 4 days already and i have gotten nothing but complements. but if you are young it may be kinda hard to pull of in school however, very nice warm cologne.

degauss

The only worse fragrance I struggle to cope on this level with is Mugler's Angel, for reference.

alexandrarst

It was my evening outdoor running/walking fragrance this winter, when I needed some warm vibes; I finished almost 30ml and already bought a 100ml refill, for the next three winters I guess. :))

It's not that bad on the smoke side, it subsides quite quickly. In the opening I get the pepper, and the “smoke” effect that comes from guaiac wood - I have smelled something similar in other perfumes with guaiac wood. Then, in 15-20 minutes, it becomes woodier, the smoke is more muted - but still there, the pepper is completely gone. And it starts to reveal something sweet, probably the combo of vanilla and resin with a faint hint of chestnut. The dry-down is amber-sweet. I don’t get the cloves, either they just skipped my bottle, or they are very well blended and low profile.:))

It's a warm and happy smell, it doesn't necessarily smell like Christmas, just warm and cozy. I understand why some say it smells more like a candle than a perfume; but I was a happy walking candle! If you don’t like woody – smoky scents…probably not a safe blind buy.

Unisex, quite good performance for Replica; I can feel it for 8 hours on the skin, on my wool scarf I smell the sweet facet for many days (without having been sprayed directly, just the transfer from the neck). Moderate sillage.

iblamesaud

I don’t get the hype over this fragrance, like I’m not even kidding it smells like burnt sugar

JaCrispyG

This is a bit confusing because I do not like most woody fragrances so I was skeptical with the top note being woody, but everything else comes together and smells like balsamic spices over a fireplace, very aptly named. One of my absolute favorites from someone who definitely prefers winter fragrances.

Echo21

Lives up to the name, it smells EXACTLY like a burning fireplace but I'm not sure I would like to smell like that.

toosimilar

I dont get the hype, anyone else?

professionalpansy

truly the perfume of all fucking time!!! btw, the yellowstone ride cologne smells very similar and it's a little more affordable!

AidenT

Very gorgeous and comforting scent

karlovonamesti

A tightly-blended accord of mild peppery spice, woody ambers, a toasted coffee note, and a fluffy vanilla musk. Holds together incredibly well (longevity clocks in at roughly fifteen hours) and maintains note fidelity for the duration, but essentially smells like a novelty, maybe a good candle or some sort of pricy room spray. I wouldn't want to wear this, it's simply too monotonous.

hasan.vvs

Perfection. This fragrance smells like you’re by a fire place in the middle of a snow storm and we’re enjoying a hot chocolate with little marshmallows. This fragrance smells like a very pleasant burning wood smell with excellent vanilla in the middle. Crowd pleasure for sure.

incat

super woody and warm vanilla. if u dont like woody scents def dont get it but for people who like non-earthy woody scents, its perfect

Joshua Zijdeman

This is the best designer on the market no doubt. Amazing woody smoky vanilla. Not everyone could pull this off tho.

sandraxv

What does Christmas smell like? Turkey in some places, hot chocolate, codfish, tamales in others, boozy or spiced drinks, fruity punch, or warm and fluffy bakery in some others. This fragrance smelling like Christmas is a lie told a thousand times...

Rating: ★★★★★★ - A Masterpiece

Looked at the notes and thought this would be my next cop and this is absolutely ass. Don't understand the hype or how anyone could even like this fragrance.

TWN2RBO

Today I wore MM By the Fireplace. This stuff amazing. On paper, this stuff is a smoke bomb, literally smells like sitting by a fireplace roasting marshmallows. On skin, this is a GORGEOUS spicy, woody, smoky, vanilla scent. I would never purchase this from spraying on a strip. Longevity and projection are wonderful, I have a 2020 batch if that even matters. The juice will absolutely get darker once you spray it and let it macerate, completely normal. Very high quality fragrance and worth every penny. MM doesn’t really discount, so pay full price as this fragrance is often faked. The label will made of cloth not a sticker. 9/10 winter banger

pulmentidiei

my sister says that this smells like christmas eve at our grandparents house while grandma is heating up barszcz with uszka, quote “smells like beetroot”

chrisk252

Dry smoke like after extinguishing a vanilla candle. Cozy, comfortable, Christmasy vibes, reminds me of twinkling holiday lights laced around a tree. Really very nice, even if it's for a specific niche vibe. Kind of love it.

Scent: 8 / Sillage: 8 / Longevity: 8

I am feeling the burn. A little bit simplistic but I really don't care because I'm obsessed. My boyfriend still smells it on me the day after I wear it. Good for days where I don't really want people to talk to me.

timsmellsg00d

Headache in a bottle. The note breakdown had me very excited however I was disappointed. Smells like a matchbox with burnt marshmallows. Very cloying burning aroma. It does have good projection which can not be said for most of the Replica line

cr7stal1zed

I ADORE this scent, beautiful and comfy but my main issue is that it does not last at all on me. If i will pay more than 100 dollars on a scent i atleast want it to last 5 hours but it dont, Plus when you first spray it on before the dry down, it smells like pickles.. idk if im the only one with this problem tho.

maelindsey

Gosh, this was a scrubber for me! One spray, and I was gagging. On my skin, it smells like woodsmoke and toasted marshmallows, but with the sweetness of the marshmallows dialed up to 100, which made it unbearable. This was unexpected, as I usually like sweet scents. I had a similar problem with Kilian's Black Phantom, which is also well-liked but an instant scrubber for me.

If you're like me, and BTF doesn't work for you, try Kerosene's Winter of '99. Winter of '99 was everything that I wanted from BTF: sweet (but not too sweet), woodsy, smoky, and wonderfully nostalgic. Kerosene doesn't sell samples, but you can find decants on Etsy.

omith.e

best fragrance in my collection hands down, i have; jpg le male parfum/elixir, invictus platinum, lattafa khamrah, gucci guilty pour homme, armani code parfum, john varvatos artisan pure, mont blanc legend

meh overrated its okay too overhyped for what it is but id reach for it sometimes

I grew up in the countryside. There were fireplaces in every house. It was as a sign of a poorly made fireplace if your clothes or hair smelled like THAT perfume. No, it isn't the subtle faint scent you smell when you're walking outside or you enter a room with a lit fireplace. Actually , at the village, if you smell like that , it means either you're poor and you can't fix it or you're old with signs of dementia so you don't realise what's happening. Or, someone didn't know how to light the fire and messed it up - I don't know, this is bad, that's what I'm saying. It seems ridiculous to me that someone would pay money to smell like that.

lululul8

Literally smells like smoke. Good as a scent resetter when shopping for other fragrances.

frank_yxz

I grew up in Asia, and this perfume brings me childhood memory of autumn. However, instead of fireplace, this perfume reminds me of the typical autumn street food Roasted Chestnuts. Chestnuts are roasted with sand and sugar over open fire. When I was a kid, I would get so excited whenever my parents brought home a paper bag of roasted chestnuts.

This perfume perfectly reproduces the smell of this popular street food. The opening is sweet and smoky, immediately brings me back to the food stand watching the wood crackling and chestnuts being prepared in the big iron pan. It is comforting, warm and delicious. It gets more and more nutty and creamy as it develops on my skin.
It is a lovely perfume for autumn / holiday season. It gives off this cozy and relaxing vibe, makes me feel like I am surrounded by family.

TBonetheFella

Sitting next to he fireplace during the holiday season, the wood snaps and cracks as the smell of nutty vanilla treats wafts from the oven in the kitchen to the living room. As you sit and watch the various football games with your family and friends, you can't help but smile at the literal and emotional warmth surrounding you. You pull your sweaters sleeves up a bit as you just take a deep breath and soak it all in. Life is good.

Warm and resinous guaiac wood, a medley of warm spices, roasted chestnuts, vanilla goodness, and a big warm sweater. This is the holiday season in a bottle, and has been my go-to scent for holiday celebrations for the past 3 years. After that initial blast of spice settles down into the woody/vanilla/nutty combo, it remains fairly linear for the remainder of the time it sticks to me. I would say this is 65% wood dominant and the rest is this nutty vanilla that is very very good. I've taken my time to really get to know this one as I have had this for about 3 years now, and while I really enjoy this scent, I don't reach for it nearly as much as I used to and I want to declutter my collection a bit. I enjoyed the time I've had with this fragrance, but especially now that I have "Memoirs of a Trespasser" by Imaginary Authors (A much more evocative and better version in my opinion) I don't see myself reaching for this nearly as much as I used to. They are different fragrances, but a similar genre of woody vanilla. 6/10

Moderate Projection and performance on skin but fantastic off clothes, one of the most "skin chemistry" dependent fragrances I have tried/owned.

90% full bottle up for sale/swap! US only

webblt

overdone, tacky. the clove and orange blossom make this scent cloying and the smokiness is so clearly artificial that it becomes unpleasant. not the worst scent ever but there are better woody vanillas out there that aren't just pouring butterscotch into a campfire. liked this when i was 19, as did men, but it needs to stay in the past (as do men). wide projection and long-lasting, but not necessarily a good thing... the juniper could have been really interesting and is my favorite note in the scent but still not worth buying. don't fall into the replica cliche--do some research and find a better blended perfume!

Alyssa31

I smelled this fragrance in a shop and instantly fell in love with it. It's very warm and smokey, but has some sweetness. It has a caramelised quality to it. I can't stop picking up the paper I sprayed it on, and I will definitely be buying. It is a bit more of a typically masculine scent, but women can definitely wear it. It's a bit niche, and some people may not like the smokiness of it. I would recommend testing it first before buying if you don't typically wear these kinds of scents

thr33stars

Mix it with 'from the garden' to smell like a wildfire asonist.

sandraxv

I've warmed up corn tortillas in the kitchen and I've forgotten only to be reminded by the smoky smell in the kitchen. This smells like that forgotten tortilla burning in the kitchen... Plus vanilla. That burning note is very dominant. Not at all what I imagined.

FreshieFrance

I don’t get the hate for this one. I have a wood burning fireplace at home- and this doesn’t smell like being at a bonfire, it’s just not that smell. This is cozy and vanilla smelling with a little booze. One spray is enough though- no more than that or it can cause headaches. Very unisex too.

AustinFerencz

Wearing this fragrance makes me feel warm inside. It truly encapsulates a memorable winter fire experience. Roasted marshmallows and toasted chestnuts with a smokey feeling in the background. It's a wintertime masterpiece for sweater weather. I was able to find 3.4 oz online for 90$, and at that price, this feels like a steal! It's unique enough that it's not related to anything I've ever smelled before, although I've not been around chestnut. I would recommend sampling this before using it, as it may come off too sweet, but this is one of my favorite winter scents! If you're looking for something that fills a room, this might not be the best pick-up, but personally, I think it's a better close-encounter scent.

Stunning, heard about it, tested it yesterday and bought straight away in the store. On paper it didn't smell good so i sprayed it on my hand, after like 10 minutes i really liked it. This is Niche quality without any doubt. Well crafted and perfomance is surprisingly good for an EDT. I have a lot of Edp's that don't last and project like this one.

Don't really understand the comment below me because it costed me only 120$ for 100ml, can't call that expensive if you're really into fragrances. And i can also tell you that there are a lot of niche brands like Tom Ford Private, modern Fragrance du Bois, By Kilian, Dior privé, Creed, Bodicea etc etc, can name a ton of em, that charge a lot more for very poor performances.

hugo1dk

Litterally just a fireplace, marshmallows and hot chocolate. If you like these, you will most definately like this.
Quite poor performance for quite a high price.
Would not recommend

Rick.900

Smells amazing like a cozy fireplace with nutty and sweet tones to compliment the smokey base. It doesn’t project or last that well, but for me personally it’s a perfect skin scent. As it’s not something I want to force onto people, but rather make the people close to me feel extra cozy

fuzzyduckling

for me had no longevity and no sillage but a lovely smell
i’ll have to try spraying more to see if that improves the longevity
woody at first but vanilla dry down
very nice but definitely not worth the price tag it’s barely on my wrist after 2hours

I actaually have a clone or "inspired by" by Odor Parfum (Swiss company) and it is VERY realistic. I love it but really just in the colder months

nuts being roasted in a overpowering female lipstick. not in a bad way, i love this one

Angelic3432

My first scent from this house and I'm in love! I have a few perfumes with a chestnut note and its becoming one of my favs! Too bad it's not used more. I need a FB ASAP. This is going to be my cold weather signature scent!

Whit

Meh, not what I thought it would be. All I get is pure campfire smoke......way later on I get a teensy bit of vanilla that peeks through. It's unique, I'll give it that, but on my skin, it's just pure campfire smell, no other notes. Bit disappointing for myself but I'm sure others love it. It's just not my cup of tea, so pass for me. Sorry Maison Margiela!

ItsLJM

I just started getting into fragrances and have been at it for like half a year. Picked up this as a decant 'cause I heard a bunch of good stuff and was curious. To be honest, not a big fan of this scent, and I kinda think it's a bit on me for not looking into it more. Everyone said it was like “straight-up fireplace,” but man, I didn't think it'd be this exact. It's super smoky, basically just like campfire smoke, not really the vibe I was going for. I was hoping for something with a bit of vanilla and some woody, nutty smells, but all I'm getting is smoke. I get that someone who's really into that specific thing might love it. - It’s clearly well-made and has its niche, but for me, it's kinda too much of a one-note deal. Probably gonna try it a few more times this winter, but that's probably it. Wish it was a little less overpowering and had some more layers to it.

She's my girl, she treats me right. So lovely and warm and smokey. I have always been unsure and too indecisive to figure out my signature scent. But By The Fireplace is the one I always come back to. The longevity is good on me and I never get sick of it. <3 <3 love

alexslam

I'm new to fragrances and this was the first niche scent I tried (bought a sample based off the notes) and I was instantly in love!

Initial scent is realistically smokey, almost like you stood by a bonfire made from quality wood. On me this settled into a mild smokiness with a more prominent vanilla scent along with what I assume is the chestnut. It did remind me a bit of a Christmas candle as some have mentioned when I first sprayed it but not necessarily in a bad way.

Unique smell that is overall comforting and snuggly! Unisex but may lean more on the masc side on some folks.

Luban

It smells like Amouage Royal Tobacco, but a bit more rounded.

blerg

The first time I smelled this I was transported to back when I was younger camping with my dad during the summer. It smells EXACTLY like a campfire. VERY woody/smokey upon initial application, though once it dries down it mellows a bit and the warmth and sweetness of the vanilla starts to come through. There's a tiny bit of bite, too, giving me the vibe of being surrounded by pine or evergreen trees . Overall, a very balanced warm/cozy scent without being overwhelming. I think this is my favorite from the Replica collection, or at the very least top three.

AgenticaBond007

I love this. I’m really enjoying smokey scents this winter. I get a little bit of a roasting chestnut and a lot of evergreen forest. Totally unisex

My signature go to bed scent lol its actually that amazing that I wear it nightly for myself when no one else will see me. I wake up to an amazing vanilla skin scent every morning. Absolutely love this stuff

indistinctlove

this has been my signature scent for years at this point. beautiful gorgeous heady spicy woody -- I don't think I'll ever use anything else for my day-to-day.

zawwarahmad

this is so comforting! love this type of scent profile.
top notes: campfire notes, smokey, spicy vanilla
middle notes: same campfire with some cardamom now that's very comforting
base notes: light woody and candy-like notes later on

what a great fragrance this is! for the price, this is my favorite from replica. Amazing fragrance well blended with good performance. Big mass appeal and unisex. Varies from 9-9.5/10 depending on my mood, but i never thought about selling this fragrance. That says something as im very picky about what i keep and dont keep.

Ruskie29

By the fire place is such a smokey woody sent. While the top note really does smell like a fire the smokey sent fades with the dry down and then you are left with a vanilla ceder wood and chestnut sent. While this is a perfect fall and winter sent I would argue that in some scenarios you could wear this on some summer nights. Imagine a rager with the boys letting the good times roll. These memories are what embodies this fragrance.

hennuv

Strong smoky wooden notes and caramellized almonds right along. Smells like you've just exited from a cozy wooden house where cookies were being baked. Absolutely delicious. Staying power is about 4h on me.

flyxboy

the smoke is so realistic it smells like a campfire to me. Absolutely delicious. I need to bathe in it. So warm. Perfect for winter.

robertambark

This is reminiscent of a burnt marshmallow being toasted around a fireplace during the holiday period. Or maybe a marshmallow that's inside of your hot chocolate cup while you're wrapped around in a knitted blanket. There's a hint of smokiness that nicely balances out the sweet and musky accords, making it the perfect fragrance for the colder season, especially Autumn.

marcr17

I find this very relaxing. The sweet and smokiness of it is calming to me. It's a great conversation starter too. People, on a number of occasions, asked me about it and were very intrigued by its unique quality

hax916

The most exquisite fragrance ive ever smelled on anyone. So sophisticated and exquisite and elegant and elaborate and graceful and beautiful. I am sure if I smelled it now I will want to fall to my knees

sarp

You either love it or hate. Plus the replica line need to move from EDT to EDP cause they have some of the best smelling fragrance out there but they lack in projection and longevity.

synesthasia

I smelled the fragrance on a very hot summer day in Greece for the first time and found it vulgar, offensive, asphyxiation in a bottle. Fast forward, New York winter and it transformed into a comforting, warming scent. It makes me want to crawl under a warm blanket burry my face in the neck of a lover and just sleep like a baby. It's a beautifully, complex but at the same time humble. No arrogance or pretention there. A quite power. Very evocative. You can see the fire glowing in the fire place, hear the wood cracking. It's a also very wintery perfume. I wouldn't go anywhere near it in summer as it turns Mr Hyde as soon as the temperature reaches the mid sixties...to me at least.

JaySentz

Warm and cozy marshmallows and roasting chestnuts by, you guessed it, a fire. So comforting it has become my bedtime fragrance as well. Perfect winter scent.

Of the Replica line probably the most wearable and long lasting that I have tried (more so than Jazz Club). Lingers with a sweet woody note that is so pleasant. I was a bit surprised by the perfume pyramid, because the notes don’t really translate to the experience 1:1 So just get your nose on it. It is popular for a reason.

Olives4life

Great smell with an amazing scent trail. If the sillage was just a tiny bit better this one would be 10/10!

riata04

Loveee this one! Smells like roasting marshmallows at a bonfire, what's not to like? I tried Dossier's Woody Chestnut as a dupe: for me, it's close, but lacking some of the vanillic sweetness and airiness of the original.

January420

Yummyyy, this reminds me of marshmallow fireside handsoap from bath and body works. It is so so nice, the smokey note is quite prominent though even in the dry down.

clubsmell

Sweet vanilla chestnut and a smoky wood, lasts many hours but fades to just vanillin. It's popular and I've smelled it around on people. Crowd-pleasing, basic, comforting. Not as an insult, I mean that in neutral terms. Out of the whole MMM "Replica" line I think it is the truest replica of ♫ chestnuts roasting on an open fire ♫

emilis

I love this fragrance, but don't blindly buy it. Some people have said that I just smell like burning wood, but in a bad way. Sadly, it doesn't perform well on my skin.

notesonabsence

I first smelt this on a man I didn't fancy very much but I loved his scent. I went back to his house just to take a photograph of the bottle. When I wear this I feel like I'm the Daddy now.

stevenflorescent10

Warm, captivating marshmallow-sweetness mixed with smoky, woody scent. The name says everything - its a scent that pictures “a couple, cuddling in the sofa, at winter, sharing the warmth of a fireplace in the center”

Love this fragrance! One of my favorites. Can see myself wearing this either on evening date nights or while doing netflix and chill with my partner on a cold, winter evening

Mooluna

Cozy woody smokey sweet winter baby

Heliotrope72

Rating: 😑
Do I like it: Meh
Who it is: a person smoking a cig in the sugar factory with some synthetic vanilla flavour splashed on him
Smells I get: sugar accord, vanilla flavouring, smoke accord
Meyer's Briggs type: ISFP, ISFJ

What I expected: a deep vanilla, surrounded in smoke, rich wood background, maybe hints of sugar caramelising

What I got: 40% sugar, 30% smoke, 20% vanilla, 10% everything else. I'm not in the mood for this right now - it's allright, but just that: ✋😐 allright. It's probably circle back for an another review when I'm feeling sugar again. I do like the smoke part though, wish it was more amped up.

What I'd do: A fireplace? They could have added caramel in here. You can't have a smell of sugar burnt without caramel. Could've added ambroxan or maple syrup to mimic it. Where is the warmth to support the "burning" aspect, also? Where is wood, resin? Ugh. Man. Very 2d.

nofacedbeauty

Definitely smells like someone who was by the fireplace. Extremely smokey. There was no scent of vanilla marshmallow on my skin, unlike what other people said. It only has a smokey scent. It didn't seem to layer well with any of my other perfumes.

dvinshultz

Man. This is so good. The name is exactly how it smells; it's by far the most photorealistic scent I've ever tried. The smoky opening can be polarizing to some, but I love it. The dry-down is just this wonderful vanilla marshmallow scent that is reminiscent of toasting s'mores near a campfire.

10/10.

Dayana11

It's no for me. Thanx god I didn't blind bought this.
I smelled a sample and 3 hours later I was still intoxicated. Smells heavy like burned wood.
The dry down it's almost nice, but for me it's a hard pass. It does lasts a few hours on skin tough...

Sappyastheygo

I made the mistake of spraying some left over fabrics that I then stored in a wooden chest. I obviously couldn't get rid of the smell and that made me hate it so much! It felt cloying, too sweet, and intrusive. Since then, I haven't given it another chance, but I might when I feel like I can approach it neutrally again.
(There also wasn’t any toasty, ashen, or Smokey notes. It was mostly like a syrupy wood).

NiraK

Smells just like the black marshmallow-scented Crayola marker.

markfromark

Opening: a slightly less sweet Memoirs of a Trespasser mixed with an old, woody accord I grew in an area with well preserved pioneer homes (think Daniel Boone). The woody accord here smells just like those home.

Drydown: The prominent and distinguishing woodiness takes a backseat in the dry down. This ultimately becomes a dryer, slightly woodier, slightly less sweet version of Memoirs of a Trespasser. This comparison shouldn't shock anyone. They are both adjacent to the idea of fire. Particularly in a wood cabin. Memoirs of a Trespasser simply takes it a step further by roasting marshmallows in the fire.

As mentioned below by another reviewer, you literally will smell like your clothes after a bonfire. Don’t get the appeal

percpatroller.frags

very cool and nice and good and smells nice and its nice

Wizzie08

I don't know if I'm missing something, why would someone pay to smell like smoke?

It just smells like I was at a bonfire and came home with a strong smoke smell stench on my clothes and skin.

Iconic'80s

On the opening I smell nothing but sweet smoke-like the smell of your sweatshirt after the smoke from a campfire has followed you all night and you were wearing a lot of vanilla scented cologne before you went to the campfire.
It doesn't take long for the smoke to fade away and you are left with a sweet vanilla that is nice and fairly subtle, slightly woody.
I get no clove ever, no juniper (other than maybe burnt juniper smoke), perhaps a little balsam.
It's a lot of smoke at first, but after the dry down it's nice. It does remind me of quiet nights by the fireplace.
If you want even more smoke in my opinion, try Merchant of Venice Liberty. It's beautiful and even smokier I think without as much vanilla.

Ollieking103

Smells exactly like a fireplace, unique!

Mouldy Mathman

The opening is good for what it describes, just roasting marshmallows by a fire. Unfortunately the dry down is terrible, and there's this sickening sweet note that I've no clue what is, mixed with smoke

kush222

When I first tried this I thought it was very smoky in a way that I enjoyed, but after I got a full bottle I thought it was too sweet. I took a long break from it in the warmer weather and now I smell that smokiness again. Very smoky some woody some vanilla and a bit of chestnut. Perfect for cold weather.

stinksogood

Sadly, this is indolic to me. I have tried to get past that bc I enjoy the other notes but it really is just B.O. at the bonfire for me. I was hoping that it would smell better on my husband's skin but it just made him smell of sweet B.O. and smoke. I wish I could love this.

user2988

not a big fan.wore this to go hang out with my friends and we all agree this just smells like smoke and pure vanilla extract. none of the other notes are apparent

Sigmaueol10

Really strong and masculine by quick review.

MacabreLemon

I was hoping for a smokier, spicier scent than what I got. Both on a test strip and on my skin the most prominent note was a sweet, resiny wood. In the first couple of hours, I caught whiffs of leather and booze, but no smoke and no pepper. The vanilla in the dry down is fine. I mostly felt like I was drinking something sugary next to a stack of logs too fresh for the fire.

fp2010

smells like burning vanilla but it’s one of the best fragrances ever in my opinion. actually so nice, only one problem which is the price, yet it’s niche quality.

smolerin

This is strong. Got this for my bday and I sprayed it one time on the box and my whole room transformed. Perfect for winter or outside occasions but I think this would be too much for a dinner date or the office. The bottle is nice quality but I wish it had a cap.

By the Fireplace represents for me the perfect unisex, smoky scent. I love that it has a pronounced smoky smell that makes it stand out from other scents but the smoky nature it’s not going too far and deep to make it unpleasant and unwearable! It has a mildly sweet smokiness.

The cloves, the orange blossom, vanilla, juniper berries, guaiac woods, pink pepper, tolu balsam and cashmeran, are the notes listed for this scent. I can see that all these notes are present throughout the different stages of the fragrance life and create one of the most addictive fragrances with an amazing trail, yet not another typical ambery, fall scent.

I know that By the Fireplace is still a very hyped scent after years from launch date, but for good reasons. It’s a more unusual scent profile. All these being said, it’s warm, it’s sweet, vanillic, with roasted chestnuts, has balsamic, woody, nutty and aromatic facets. It’s complex and interesting!

The addition of orange blossoms, pink pepper, cloves, cashmeran and vanilla offer subtle, more feminine nuances to the blend. I love the combination of both masculine and feminine elements that create an intoxicating blend that lasts for hours and hours on me (at least on me it performs well)!

For the quality, uniqueness and potency of the scent, By the Fireplace is an absolute must for fall season. I think in time it will become a cult classic, like the French perfumes.

For a niche house, Maison Margiela is very fairly priced and easy to sample nowadays. Give it a try and you’ll be surprised at how amazing it smells.

When I first bought this, I was enchanted by it! However, I now find it hard to wear by itself. It's a bit too campfire for me (I know, it's sort of the point) but I remember it being sweeter when I first bought it. I've kept it out of environments that would change the composition, so I'm not sure what happened. I plan on testing it in store next time I go out to see if it's just my bottle. For now, however, I just first layer some vanilla oil and spray By The Fireplace over it. Easy fix! It is certainly a spicy, woodsy, smoke scent that would thrive on a cold night in the autumn or winter. The longevity is decent, I think 6-8 hours before it starts wearing out. Definitely one of my favorites.
