Rodgersia is a majestic looking perennial for lovers of dramatic shapes and sizes. Rodgersia podophylla has palmately divided leaves composed of 5 large, heavily veined leaflets with acute tips and deep lobes, as if taken from a cartoon hero symbol. Thanks to its bold foliage that looks as if the plant escaped from rainforest jungle, this architectural plant perfectly fits exotic lansdcapes.

Braunlaub is an attarctive rodgersia podophylla variety from Germany with bronze-brown hues on large leaves. They are up to 40 cm across, glossy, fresh green as they emerge, and gain various depths of bronze to chocolate brown hues just before flowering. Flowers are creamy white, fragrant, composed in 25-30 cm long, pyramidal panicles, borne atop about 1m tall stems which rise above the foliage in early summer. From up close you can see that the individual tiny flowers are star-shaped and resemble those of stonecrop.

It grows best in shaded and partially shaded locations since filtered sunlight never causes sun scorch which is usual on sunny locations with dry soil. It is a tuberous perennial forming a dense clump, not invading its surroundings. The soil should be humus-rich and loose, never compacted. Keep it constantly moist for best results. Fully hardy to approx. -30°C (USDA zone 5).
